The first flower basket the Leibowitzes received after their second daughter was born two weeks ago didn't come from friends or family -- it came from the father's law firm. Along with congratulations, Gary Leibowitz's employer, Saul Ewing LLP in Baltimore, also allowed him three months of paid parental leave. "There is a life outside this firm and the firm acknowledges it and supports you spending time with your family," said Leibowitz, 33, who lives in Pikesville. Leibowitz, whose wife, Dena, gave birth to Dillan on March 24, has not decided how long his leave will last -- it will depend on his caseload.

"The Physician and the Slave Trade," by Daniel Leibowitz. W.H. Freeman and Co. 303 pages. $27.95.Kirk: A Man of His Time." That's author Daniel Leibowitz's title of the final chapter of this tale of the life of Sir John Kirk, physician, botanist, explorer and the diplomat who negotiated the 1873 treaty that, on paper at least, ended the East African slave trade. You read chapter titles like that and cringe. What, exactly, does Leibowitz mean? Usually saying someone is "of their time" is a preface to justify some flagrantly racist or sexist opinion the person holds or conduct the person has committed.

The father of a man who committed suicide after leaving Howard County General Hospital's psychiatric ward sees his suit against the hospital and one of its doctors as a way of correcting an injustice.Stephen Leibowitz and his wife, Karen Leibowitz, claim that Dr. Jerome Cripe and the hospital staff should have prevented their son from leaving the hospital. David William Leibowitz jumped to his death from a Columbia office building a few hours later. The Leibowitzes, formerly of the Wilde Lake village of Columbia, are seeking unspecified damages in a suit they filed against the hospital and Dr. Cripe in Howard Circuit Court on May 18.The couple, now of Reston, Va., say in the suit that the hospital and Dr. Cripe failed to meet the standard of care for treating their son."

A Circuit Court jury has cleared a Columbia doctor and Howard County General Hospital of any blame for the suicide of a patient who walked out of the hospital's psychiatric ward in 1988 and jumped off an 11-story building near The Mall in Columbia.Dr. Jerome Cripe's victory Friday reversed a state arbitration panel's 1993 decision that Dr. Cripe had been negligent in David Leibowitz's death. That panel -- made up of a health care official, an attorney and a layperson -- cleared the hospital of liability but found fault with Dr. Cripe and awarded Mr. Leibowitz's parents $100,000 for pain and suffering.
