It wasn't so long ago that former Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand couldn't even move his shoulders, which is why it's hard not to marvel at his willingness to offer one of them to anybody facing a major life challenge. If you don't know his story, you probably missed last year's ESPY Awards or walked past the aisle at Barnes and Noble where his two books are on display. He was the 20-year-old special teams player who suffered a severe spinal cord injury in a 2010 game against Army at MetLife Stadium that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

They're calling it a symbolic gesture: an NFL team signs a guy in a wheelchair. But the  Tampa Bay Buccaneers signing of paralyzed Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand is more than that. It's a big touch of humanity in a business that can be cold and hard and as bottom-line, what-have-you-done-for-me-lately as exists on the planet. So good for the Bucs. And good for their classy coach Greg Schiano, who was LeGrand's coach when he played for the Scarlet Knights. "Leading up to the draft, I couldn't help but think that this should've been Eric's draft class," Schiano said.

There's a desert in their basement. It is in this drafty, dusty space called Apple Orchard Studios where Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand often escape into their surreal musical world. White sand from Home Depot covers a large part of the cluttered space. The mound is dotted with dying cacti, melted candles, a big glass water jug, sticks and rocks. A few weeks ago Scally and Legrand, collectively known as the Baltimore ambient-pop duo Beach House, used the homemade desert in a video for a single from Devotion, the group's new album in stores today.

The first varsity swimming season in Anne Arundel County exceeded expectations, said Greg LeGrand, the county administrator of athletics. "We were very surprised with how many students came out," said LeGrand, who is in his first year as the county's athletic administrator. "We really thought we would have about five or six schools with about 100 kids, but we're over about 400 kids who came out. We got a lot of help from the community, and it's been wonderful." After a regular season that consisted of 10 meets for each of the 12 public school teams, the first county championships took place Friday night at the Arundel Olympic Swim Center.
