State police said yesterday that they still have no suspects in the slaying of part-time bartender Danny Bruce Boone near the Mount Airy American Legion Post early Saturday.Detective Sgt. Donald Hoffman of the Westminster barracks said additional investigators from state police headquarters have joined the investigation because of the number of people police must interview.The sergeant, who is lead investigator in the case, said troopers are trying to interview many of the approximately 200 guests who were at a wedding reception at the post, in the 800 block of Prospect Road, when a fight broke out about 1:15 a.m. Saturday.

Curtis Bay's bright marble war memorial, threatened with the prospect of foreclosure because of an unpaid sidewalk repair bill, is being saved by the kindness of soldiers and sailors.The Chief Petty Officers Association at Fort Meade says it will donate the $7,225 that the American Legion post in Curtis Bay needs to pay Baltimore for repairs to about 200 feet of sidewalk around the monument, at Church Street and Fairhaven Avenue."If people in the military don't care about veterans, who will?"

You can find them in gas stations, truck stops, stores selling military goods, even in American Legion posts -- Desert Storm T-shirts that are selling nearly as fast as a Howard County graphics company can print them.The shirts were the brainstorm of designer Jane Whyte and her boss, Samuel R. Andelman, owner of Graphic Concepts, who plans to donate $1 for each one sold to the Armed Forces Relief Fund.The company is one of many churning out Desert Storm products, some purely for profit and others to help veterans or military families and support groups.

Five prize-winning high school orators gathered at American Legion Post 191 in Mount Airy Tuesday evening to compete for the honor of representing Carroll County at the district level of the American Legion's 1995 National High School Oratorical Contest.Carla J. Snook of Westminster took top honors in the county competition with her prepared nine-minute oration, "The Voice of a Nation."Carla, who is a senior at Westminster High School, received a $100 prize in the county contest and the $100 first prize at the post-level contest held by American Legion Post 31 of Westminster.

Hammond senior is semifinalist for scholarshipRobert D. Greiner, a senior at Hammond High School, has been named one of 160 semifinalists in North Carolina State University's merit scholarship competition.The son of Margie and Robert C. Greiner of Laurel, Robert will compete for amounts ranging from a one-time $1,500 grant to a scholarship worth $7,500 a year.Vice president of the senior class, Robert plans to major in engineering at North Carolina State, Virginia Tech or Carnegie Mellon University.

The city of Baltimore is looking to recruit 100 black men to serve as mentors to male youths in some of its most troubled middle and high schools. The initiative, organized by the Urban Leadership Institute, was partly prompted by the increase in violent incidents and disruptions at many city schools this fall. The goal is to give students role models, said David Miller, chief visionary officer for the Leadership Institute, a consulting firm that designs programs for urban youth. About 90 percent of city students are black.

Edith Nellie Reese, former owner of a Carroll County grocery store and World War II veteran, died of liver and kidney failure Monday at Hanover Hall Nursing Center in Hanover, Pa. She was 79. The former Edith N. Peay was born in Baltimore and raised in Westport. She attended city public schools. She enlisted in the Women's Army Corps during World War II, and served as a technician with the 15th Hospital Co. at Fort Benning, Ga. She was married in 1949 to Carroll W. Reese, a steelworker who died in 1997.

An Anne Arundel Circuit Court judge yesterday upheld the firing of an Annapolis police officer accused of lying about how he and fellow officers responded to a drunken disturbance at the Cook-Pinkney American Legion Post 141 on Forest Drive.Judge Robert H. Heller Jr. ruled yesterday that there was sufficient evidence to support Chief Harold Robbins' dismissal of Officer Keith L. Brown, a 32-year-old officer assigned to the canine unit.Officer Brown was one of several officers who responded to a disturbance at the legion post March 16, 1992.

The American Legion Post is sponsoring the National High School Oratorical Contest that can net a local student more than $18,000 in scholarship money.Any high school student in grades nine to 12 and a citizen of the United States is eligible to participate.The contest is meant to develop deeper knowledge and appreciationof the Constitution of the United States.Other objectives of thecontest include the development of leadership speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.
