A Mount Airy man was slain early yesterday after a wedding reception at the town's American Legion post, where a fight broke out involving some of the 200 guests and legion employees, state police at Westminster said.Daniel Bruce Boone, 45, was found lying on a nearby road, wearing a tuxedo and with a severe head injury shortly after state police troopers responded to break up the fight about 1:15 a.m., police said.An autopsy revealed Mr. Boone died from a blow to his forehead, said Sergeant Andy Mays of the Westminster barracks.

Mandy Kent of Manchester earned second-place honors in the Western Maryland district-level competition of the 56th annual American Legion National Oratorical Contest.Mandy, a junior at North Carroll High School, represented Carroll County in the contest Tuesday at Francis Scott Key American Legion Post No. 11 in Frederick.Matthew Johnston, of Frederick, a senior at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, won the district competition.As runner-up, Mandy received a $150 cash prize and will participate in the state contest March 7 in Annapolis if Matthew is unable to attend.

The American Legion Post is sponsoring the National High School Oratorical Contest, which can net a local student more than $18,000 in scholarship money.Any high school student in grades 9 to 12 and a citizen of the United States is eligible.The contest is meant to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States.Other objectives include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think andspeak clearly and intelligently, and an appreciation of the duties, rights and privileges of American citizens.

PAUL L. MCGEE, SR. passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2006 in Baltimore, MD at the age of 88 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph E. Mc Gee and Annie V. (nee Kidd) Mc Gee. He leaves his beloved wife Evelyn E. Mc Gee (nee Lloyd); his loving children Paul L. Mc Gee, Jr. and his wife Patricia E., Karen Mc Gee Culler and her husband Jeffrey L. Culler; his adoring grandchildren Paul C. Culler and Matthew M. Culler; his cherished brother and sisters John F. Mc Gee, Mary Poling and Helen Lightman.

Richard Louderback, 62, Army chief warrant officerRichard Louderback, a retired Army chief warrant officer, died of cancer Saturday at his home in Severn. He was 62.Mr. Louderback enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1953 and transferred to the Army a decade later. During his years in the service, he completed two tours in Vietnam, where he earned several awards and decorations for meritorious service.He retired in 1973 and moved to Severn in 1981.Mr. Louderback was born in Lafayette, Ind., and graduated from high school in nearby Reynolds, Ind.He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 160, American Legion Post No. 276 and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, all in Severn.

Low-income Baltimore County residents will be able to obtain surplus government food at 10 locations beginning Tuesday.The food includes peanut butter, applesauce, butter, canned pork, cornmeal, rice, beans, raisins and orange juice. To qualify, residents must have a surplus food identification card or proof of their family size and income. They must also live in the ZIP code assigned to each distribution point.
