MIDDLESEX, Va. -- Leah Congleton, who five years ago was quoted in her high school yearbook as saying she would never wear bell-bottoms, now wears inmate attire: orange pants, orange tunic, orange flip-flops.Smart, popular and pretty, she seemed to have it all together as a student at Middlesex High. She was on the honor roll, a cheerleader and planned to be a teacher. Leah Goldstein, 10, prefers the tuba to the violin."The violin is too perfect. People who play it act too perfect," said Goldstein, who lives in Pikesville and attends Wellwood International School. It featured mostly local tuba players ages 2 1/2 to 73 playing Christmas songs and carols from "Adeste Fideles" to "Jingle Bells."

SHE STARTED LIFE in a big, poor family on the Eastern Shore, one of eight children whose parents had to scrub, polish and mow for wealthy white folks to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. There was no reason to expect Leah Goldsborough or her seven brothers to get much further than their parents. Not in a town where black children were barred from the local library. Not in a country where black teachers earned less than butlers. So there was a sense of triumph when a crowd of 350 gathered at Martin's West last October to celebrate the retirement of Leah Goldsborough Hasty: teacher, principal and educational pioneer.

"Five years ago this month, Neal, my first husband and college sweetheart, was killed when the small company plane in which he and his supervisor were flying crashed somewhere in the mountains of Colorado," says Leah, 29, her blue eyes filling with tears. The two men were returning from a routine check of one of the company's remote power plants when a storm came up suddenly and the pilot got lost in the dense fog. The bodies were never recovered.Leah thought that by now she would have gotten over the tragedy, especially because she's been happily remarried for three years to Jim. Helping children deal with death has become a growth industry, with grief counselors flocking to the site of tragedies and offering workshops for parents who want to ease their children's pain. But books have been doing that for a long time. From "Old Yeller" to "Charlotte's Web" to "Bridge to Terabithia," stories have taken kids into worlds in which they learn about losses. The term "bibliotherapy" never cropped up when I was a kid, but crying with Wilbur when Charlotte died helped me sort through my confusion when my grandmother died.

An Anne Arundel County woman and her attorneys say police overreacted when officers' efforts to check on her - at the request of hospital staff - led to her husband's shooting. Michael Housley, 51, is recovering at Maryland Shock Trauma Center from gunshot wounds to the jaw, neck and shoulder after a confrontation with officers Sunday in his home. "It is outrageous," said Leah Housley, 44, his wife, who was barred from seeing her husband, who was in critical condition, for several days.

This was no ordinary Tuesday afternoon. Indoor soccer games were skipped and piano lessons forsaken. Megan Foard of Forest Hill apologized in advance to her pony, A.J., for bowing out of their regular after-school ride. "He was cool with it, though," the 13-year-old said. And why wouldn't he be? Megan and her friends had to-die-for concert tickets - for Hannah Montana, who played at the 1st Mariner Arena last night before a sold-out crowd of screaming tweens. Thousands of lucky girls, and not a few boys, scampered home from school to prepare for the arrival of the 15-year-old singer-cum-actress, whose real name is Miley Cyrus, and who holds the youthful audience in the palm of her pretty hand.

I have returned from a work trip and need to make things right with the 3-year-old princess in my house. My daughter Leah has always loved to hear stories while snuggling with a parent. And, as do most preschool girls I know, she has a fascination with tiaras, dainty slippers, ball gowns and happily-ever-afters. Where she got it, I do not know. But when your child is 3, imaginative and imperious, you go with what works. So I cuddle up close and begin the story of Rapunzel -- she of the hair long enough for a prince to climb.
