The Winfield Cavaliers' 6-8 Federal Black youth football squad, members of the Mid-Maryland Youth Football and Cheer League, capped the season with a 14-6 Super Bowl championship win on Nov. 17 against the Catonsville Stars. The contest was played at Blandair Park in Columbia. The Cavaliers, who went 8-1 during the regular season, defeated Woodlawn and Bowie on teh way to the Super Bowl berth.  In the title game, the team saw points scored by Peyton Thomas and Landon Rutley.

County Lanes in Westminster was the scene for the Marc Rickels Memorial Fund Tenpin Singles Bowling Tournament. Five dollars of each entry fee was collected for the Rickels Fund.Seventy-two entries generated $360; a cake sale added $116, and 50-50 raffles sent the total over $500.When the last bowling ball rolled into the pit, four pins separated the top three competitors.Jennifer Roe fired scratch games of 211, 199 and 214 and added 141 handicapped pins for the winning total of 765. That 624 three-game set was a career high for the Westminster resident.

John Colbert has been bowling tenpins for over 30 years.That bowling career started at Fort Lee, Va., when he served in the Air Force. Now the Baltimore resident does all his league bowling at Brunswick Normandy in four leagues -- Tuesday Doubles, Friday BGE, Saturday Weekend Wonders and Wednesday Anytime/Funtime.In May 1993 he posted a 300 game and just a few weeks ago he came very close to an 800 series.Colbert, a right-handed down-and-in bowler, also came close to another 300 game."That first game [in the Tuesday Doubles]

Helen Duval is a tenpin bowler who is in the Women's International Bowling Congress Hall of Fame. And, John Crunkleton's Edgemere Bowling Center is a duckpin house.So on Tuesday, Nov. 15, what was Duval doing at the Edgemere center? She was conducting a bowling clinic.Patients from Fort Howard Veterans Medical Center crowded the 12-lane center and, strange as it sounds, a champion tenpin bowler gave instructions on duckpin bowling.Duval is with the WIBC Speakers Bureau and, along with Earl Anthony, is honorary BVL chairman.

Mount Airy Lanes owner Joe Rineer knows good bowling, and he sees itwhen Will Fleming steps up to the line."Will's a model of what abowler's form should be," said Rineer. "He's smooth and easy on the approach and accurate with his shots."Fleming's been practicing that smooth and easy form since 1945. Lately, he's been duckpin bowling in the Monday night league, the Wednesday night league, two leagues on Friday and subbing on Tuesdays, all at Mount Airy Lanes."I started out a farm laborer, then I ownedmy own farm," the Mount Airy resident said.

The Young American Bowling Alliance, a nationwide tenpin organization devoted to introducing youths to bowling and to developing their ability, has 18 Master Instructors on its national roster.Cary Pon has just been appointed a Master Instructor for the Mid-Atlantic region."Being named Coach of the Year by the Baltimore-area YABA was great," Pon said. "Being selected as a Master Instructor is unbelieveable."Being chosen as the local Coach of the Year (there are 20 tenpin centers in the local organization)

The 11th Wayne Logue Memorial Duckpin Doubles tournament at Mount Airy Lanes produced some impressive scores -- by both veterans and novices.Dean Stultz and Bob Stockman teamed up to throw a total of scratch and handicapped pins of 1,068. Stockman shot a 491 series, and Stultz had 460."Stockman throws 500 sets like I throw 400 sets," Stultz said. "I just got a little lucky that day."Stultz, who lives in Taneytown, has been bowling for a long time. He has a 133 average in the single league he competes in at Village Lanes in Frederick and has posted a high game of 224, a high set of 511."

Barbie Bryant has been bowling tenpins for "about four or five years."The Ellicott City native now lives in Catonsville and bowls two nights a week -- Sunday's Colts and Fillies and the Wednesday Social Security league at Brunswick Normandy.For Bryant the league bowling is a way to escape the pressure of her work; she's a nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the intensive care unit.That doesn't mean that she doesn't take her bowling seriously, she does. You can't carry an average in the 190s without concentration and dedication.

The Harford Women's Bowling Association acknowledges the top league secretary in the county each year with its Secretary of the Year award.Jean Wilcox of Bel Air earned that accolade for the 1994-95 season.Wilcox bowls in two morning leagues at Forest Hill Lanes, the Tuesday Lucky Ladies and the Friday Brunch Bunch."I used to complain about the way the former secretaries handled the details of the bowling program," Wilcox said."I guess that I talked about it so much that I got on my teammates' nerves because one of them said, 'Jean, if it bothers you that much, run for secretary yourself,' so the next year I did."

Jason Huestif of Ellicott City competed in the recent 12th annual Baltimore Young American Bowling Alliance Championship Tournament at Bowl America Odenton.Huestif threw his best three-game series in the tournament. He rolled games of 248, 245 and 212 for a 705 series.It was the highest series posted by any boy in the tournament.Bowling tenpins for half of his 16 years, the junior at Centennial High School bowls in two YABA leagues, Saturday morning at Greenway Odenton and the Youth Travel league.

It's almost a cliche that brothers and will fight tooth and nail.But, not always.Brunswick Columbia Recreation Center played host to its annual Junior Columbia Turkey Tournament the day after Thanksgiving for young tenpin bowlers.The format consisted of three games -- the first automatically awarded a strike to the bowler in the third, sixth and ninth frames the second was nine no-tap when a nine-count is scored as a strike and the third returned to regular scoring.

Mark Brown of Bel Air took first place in the National Amateur Bowlers Tour Judy Soutar Open tenpin tournament held Oct. 5 and 6 at Forest Hill Lanes. Brown, who has been bowling for less than two years, took home $1,000 in prize money from the televised event.About 150 bowlers competed."I moved to this area a year-and-a-half ago, and friends got me started bowling. I'm glad," said BrownMark now coaches young bowlers on Saturday mornings and has built his average to 198. Mark does all his league bowling at Forest Hill Lanes.
