Allegations that a cabal of Black Guerrilla Family gang members effectively took over the Baltimore City Detention Center have prompted a rare out-of-session legislative hearing on the state's prison system. The House Judiciary Committee scheduled a May 8 public inquiry into the matter, according to committee members and staff.  The House Appropriations Committee, which oversees funding for the prison system, has been invited to attend the 1 p.m. meeting.  A federal indictment unsealed Tuesday alleged the BGF gang, under the leadership of inmate Tavon White, established a lucrative smuggling operation that involved corrupt female corrections officers.

The Orioles' 17-game extra-inning winning streak ended Wednesday afternoon, but the team's 100-game winning streak when leading at the completion of the seventh inning is still alive and well heading into the Orioles' 11-day, 11-game West Coast road trip, which begins tonight in Oakland. When that streak - which dates back to Aug. 8, 2011 - reached the century mark after Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays, closer Jim Johnson noted that the streak coincided with the time when the Orioles began to turn things around.

Today's guest is Johns Hopkins midfielder Sarah Taylor, from Farnham, England. Taylor, who leads the Blue Jays in goals with 36, played for the Scottish national team in the 2007 under-19 world championships and for England in 2011. This summer, she will play for England in the elite World Cup. Taylor also has 23 draw controls and 17 ground balls for the Blue Jays, who visit Ohio State in the regular-season finale Sunday before hosting the American Lacrosse Conference tournament at Homewood Field beginning May 2. The junior is majoring in biology with a focus on pre-med.

This season, UMBC has featured one of Division I's more opportunistic man-up offenses, converting 39.5 percent of its chances (15-of-38) which ranks 14th in the country. The program's strength will soon be tested this Saturday when America East rival Binghamton pays a visit to UMBC Stadium in Catonsville. The Bearcats (5-8 overall and 2-2 in the league) are tops in the nation in suffocating extra-man opportunities, surrendering just four goals on 28 man-up chances and turning away 85.7 percent of those opportunities.

Forward John Grant Jr. finished with three goals and two assists as the visiting Colorado Mammoth defeated the Minnesota Swarm, 16-14, on Saturday night before a season-high announced 12,243 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The Mammoth (7-9), which led 8-7 at the half, clinched a National Lacrosse League playoff berth earlier in the evening when the Rochester Knighthawks defeated the Bandits in Buffalo. As the No. 4 seed, Colorado will visit the top-seeded Calgary Roughnecks in a semifinal next Saturday at Scotiabank Saddledome.

When Orioles catcher Matt Wieters threw out Tampa Bay's speedy center fielder Desmond Jennings trying to steal second base in the ninth inning Thursday night, it wasn't just an important play in a game the Orioles eventually won in 10 innings. It served as further example that Wieters - and, really, the entire defense - has shut down the opposition's running game so far in 2013. How good has Wieters and company been? They have thrown out eight of 10 would-be base stealers this year - an 80 percent mark that is by far the best in the majors.

Severna Park and Broadneck have developed one of the area's top girls lacrosse rivalries. Close games have been the norm between the Anne Arundel County powers, including last year's one-goal Severna Park victory. But on Friday, it was Broadneck that won. Sparked by a five-goal run, the host Bruins turned a three-goal second-half deficit into a 9-8 victory over the defending Class 4A-3A state champions. Senior midfielder Ellie McNulty's four-goal effort led the Bruins (8-2, 6-1)

When Kyle Boncaro and Rory Averett graduated last year as Goucher's all-time leader in points (273) and goals (190) respectively, the attack's cupboard appeared to be bare. But the unit has been rebuilt and is thriving again. Junior Max Roach ranks second on the team in both goals (17) and points (25), junior Dylan Zook leads the team in assists (16), and sophomore Sam Morgan is second in assists (14) and third in points (24). Senior Zachary Fratella ranks fifth in points (19)

Gov. Martin O'Malley's chief of staff will step down in May to head the Goldseker Foundation in Baltimore, the nonprofit plans to announce today. Matt Gallagher, who has worked with O'Malley for 13 years and ran Baltimore's CitiStat operation, will succeed the retiring Timothy D. Armbruster. Armbruster ran Goldseker for 34 years, focusing its philanthropy on neighborhood revitalization and economic development. "I've always felt a strong connection to the city, and this was a particularly exciting opportunity that hasn't been available in a generation," said Gallagher, 40. O'Malley expects to announce Gallagher's replacement today.
