After the kudos they've gotten for their newest building on campus, the glass-clad Brown Center, leaders of the Maryland Institute College of Art have set out to make sure their next building is equally well-received. And they're doing so in characteristically MICA fashion -- by taking an unconventional approach. The college this summer launched a competition to come up with a conceptual design for a $20 million, 200-student residence hall on the northern edge of Baltimore's Mount Royal cultural district.

The Maryland Institute College of Art's new $20 million Brown Center has been marred by gunfire that shattered seven of the large panes of its glass facade. A spray of bullets was fired at the building late Friday in an incident that college President Fred Lazarus IV called "an act of extreme vandalism." The building at 1301 Mount Royal Ave., adjoining Baltimore's Bolton Hill neighborhood, was unoccupied at the time, and no one was hurt. Although the shots were heard by police and campus security officers, there was no witness, police and college officials said.

The way Jerry L. Lazarus sees it, too many vision-impaired seniors think losing their sight means living in total darkness. "So many seniors who are losing their sight don't really know what to do," said Lazarus, special projects director for the Baltimore-based National Federation of the Blind. "Their families don't know what to do. There are seniors out there who need information and help." The federation, which was founded in 1940 and moved to the city in 1978, will sponsor the 2004 Possibilities Fair Thursday at its new Jernigan Institute at 1800 Johnson St. in South Federal Hill.

CHAUVINISTS WORRIED that immigration threatens to blemish the nation's "purity" might look at Potomac, the Washington suburb where I live. It was a drowsy, lily-white stretch of farms, stables and split-level houses when we moved there 30 years ago. Since then, it has burgeoned into a multicultural, multicolored, multilingual enclave - dramatic evidence that the United States, despite its manifold defects, is a beacon for throngs from everywhere....

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Lionel Tate pleaded guilty yesterday to second-degree murder in the death of 6-year-old Tiffany Eunick but did not give the mother of his victim the public apology she wanted. Tate, who turns 17 today, spoke only in response to the judge's questions, answering "yes, sir" and "no, sir." Still Tiffany's mother, Deweese Eunick-Paul, showed extraordinary compassion for the teen-ager while also severely criticizing his mother, who was baby-sitting Tiffany when she was beaten to death in July 1999 in Pembroke Park.
