Once a rock group arrives at a certain level of success, it's pretty much a given that it will turn up on "MTV Unplugged." Most of the time, that works out to the act's advantage, since an "Unplugged" slot usually results in added status, star power and legitimacy (not to mention the odd platinum album). But not every act is flattered by the format, as Stone Temple Pilots make plain in their "MTV Unplugged" appearance (which debuts tonight at 10 p.m. on MTV). After watching the band amble through five songs from its debut album, "Core," most viewers will feel that "Pull the Plug" would have been a more appropriate venue.

When record industry types talk about an established rock star whose older albums sell consistently, they say the back catalog is "golden."But that's literally the case with Eric Clapton. Because he's a favorite of audiophile rock fans, nearly a dozen albums featuring Clapton have been reissued as ultra-high fidelity gold discs. Although none of his recent albums have been released in this form, a wide array of older titles are available -- ranging from "Eric Clapton" and "461 Ocean Boulevard" to Cream's "Disraeli Gears" and "Layla" by Derek and the Dominos.

From childhood, Majnum burned with passion for the beautiful Layla, and she returned his devotion. But because the couple could not marry, Majnum went mad and wandered through the wilderness clad only in rags. Then Majnum's friend, seeking to test Layla's love, told her Majnum was dead. This news broke Layla's heart, and she perished from grief. When Majnum arrived at her funeral, so overcome with remorse was he that he leapt into the grave beside his beloved and died on the spot. This tragic tale of star-crossed lovers forms the central chapter of the Khamsa -- or quintet of tales -- by Amir Khusraw, a 13th-century Persian-language poet known as "the Parrot of India."
