Services will take place for Ellicott City resident Lavinia Hagner Sill at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.Mrs. Sill, 78, died of a brain tumor on Dec. 25 at University Hospital in Baltimore.She was a resident of Parkville until 1979, when she moved to Ellicott City. Mrs. Sill worked in the accounting department of Southland Corporation in Baltimore until her retirement in 1977.Other interests included her six grandchildren.She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Stevenson C. Sill; a son, S.Carroll Sill of Ellicott City; a sister, Rose Rickert of Pasadena; two brothers, James Hagner and Elmer Hagner, both of Annapolis; and six grandchildren.

Her work has received the most important awards for her genre, from the Nebula to the Hugo, as well as the National Book Award and the Pushcart Prize. She is - to use a much overused, but in her case apt, term - an icon. That said, LeGuin has not written a new work in a decade, although she's done a series of important translations, including one of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching.
