Kenni Patrick, a student at St. Vincent Pallotti High School, served as a page for the North Carolina House of Representatives, in Raleigh, N.C. The daughter of Kenneth and Tanya Patrick, of Laurel, she was sponsored by Rep. Julia Howard (Republican-Davie, Forsyth). Pages spend a week at the General Assembly assisting members and their staff and learning about the structure of North Carolina government.

The Business and Professional Women of Maryland's annual conference is May 17 and 18 at the Holiday Inn Laurel-West, 15101 Sweitzer Lane. The theme of the conference is "The Power of YOU - Equality, Advocacy, Development!" Several conference events are open to the public, including the kick off luncheon with a focus on women in the military; the Individual Development Program sessions on public speaking and goal setting; and the Saturday luncheon with a panel discussing human trafficking.

Yawar Raza and Catherine Turner , both of Laurel, were named to the dean's list for the winter quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology, in Rochester, N.Y. Raza is a third-year student in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, while Turner, a second-years student, is in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences. Alexandra Durso and Jacqueline Sams, both of Laurel, were among the 300 James Madison University students who embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world.

City officials have received a total of $300,000 from the state this year to support renovation, reconstruction and purchasing of equipment for the Laurel Armory Anderson Murphy Community Center, according to District 21 Democratic state Sen. Jim Rosapepe. A $200,000 matching funds grant was approved by the state Board of Public Works on April 17, and a District 21 bond bill in the 2013 legislative session awarded an additional $100,000 to the city for upkeep of the Armory. The Armory is used for city Parks and Recreation programs, and is located at Fifth and Montgomery streets.

The bad news is that the smaller of the two lakes that make up Laurel Lakes is almost filled in with trees, bushes, cattails and other shrubbery. Only a small portion of that upper lake, near Oxford Street, has a section of water visible from the decks of the surrounding town houses along its banks. The good news is that some time next year, Prince George's County officials, who have authority over the water in the lakes, plan to dredge the upper lake, something many local residents have been calling for over the past 10 years.

Few people were walking around downtown Laurel Tuesday evening, but at Main Street Sports Grill, nearly every seat at the bar was taken for happy hour. Since April marks the start of Major League Baseball play, the multiple flat-screen televisions behind the bar were showing ESPN's highlights from games across the nation. However, come 7 p.m., ESPN would be replaced by coverage of two games, one featuring the Baltimore Orioles, and the other the Washington Nationals. Laurel is sandwiched between Baltimore and Washington, about a half-hour drive away from either city, and at Main Street Sports Grill, baseball loyalties were divided between the two teams.
