After prelims with her manager, the reporter is at last allowed to speak to the star herself. He is not without some qualms: he has interviewed a remote Jack Nicholson, an Athena-like Kathleen Turner, a glowering Harrison Ford, a grimly taciturn Paul Newman, an unbearably creepy Harold Pinter, the blissfully shallow Kevin Costner, even had an audience, man on man, with the great Redford and the great Eastwood. But they were mere actors; we are talking a star. After a moment she comes to the phone.

IF ANYONE doubts that the collective intelligence level in this country is in steep decline, just look at the pets some people keep. For example, right now the hot new pet among the terminally dim-witted is the ferret. To me, having a ferret as a pet is like having a rat as a pet. Only a rat seems more cuddly. In fact, before this current craze, the ferret would have made my Top 5 list of Animals Least Likely To End Up As Pets, right up there with the cockroach, hyena, wolverine and cobra. The thing I want to know is, what exactly does anyone find endearing about a ferret?

JUST WONDERING:* Could ABC have been any more blatant in plugging actress Linda Evans' return to television in Sunday's TV movie, "I'll Take Romance?" Beyond all the pre-show promos with clips from the film, Evans popped up as a guest on "America's Funniest People," the show immediately preceding the movie. Did she mention the film? Do you have to ask?* Is shopping really big news? We ask because local stations mobilized to cover Friday's post-Thanksgiving shopping scene as if it were a snowstorm, complete with live reports from area malls.

Each week The Sun's John McIntyre presents a moderately obscure but evocative word with which you may not be acquainted, another brick to add to the wall of your working vocabulary. This week's word: SKINT You may find yourself momentarily embarrassed when the check arrives, or impecunious, penurious, or flat-out stony broke. But if you want a succinct term, you can use skint . It's British, a variant of skinned , and thus metaphorically redolent.

There has never been a TV series where the animal hero was a bat. Why not? Why couldn't Lassie have been a bat? There could have been an episode wherein Lassie and her young master, Timmy, are frolicking around the farm, with Lassie playfully catching insects for Timmy via sonar, when suddenly ... UH-oh! Timmy is caught in the quicksand! So Lassie flits as fast as she can back to the farmhouse, where she squeaks and hurls her tiny self against the screen door until Timmy's family, realizing that something is wrong, comes running outside and kills Lassie with a rake.

The birth of 3 B Stables came at dinner near the bottoms of a couple of bottles of wine. The three professional women who had just decided on buying a horse together struggled with a name for their stable. During the salads, they figured they'd come up with something sophisticated that represented their standing in the business world. But by dessert, filling their glasses a final time, they did what only good friends can do. They got down and dirty.Their best intentions deteriorated into this: 3 B Stables, meaning "three babes" or "three broads" or, if anyone asked publicly, "three beauties."
