Lawrence E. "Larry" Walker, Sr., 50, had always been involved in the schools his two sons attended, but when they entered high school he and other fathers began to see the need to mentor African-American boys there. Last spring, he won the first Comcast Parent Involvement Matters Award, given by the Maryland State Department of Education. Tell us a little bit about your background. I moved to Columbia at age 15 from the rough urban streets of Pittsburgh to live with my Aunt Marie and Uncle Haywood; they could only imagine the impact it would have on life.

For the first time, white students make up less than 50 percent of Howard County's 51,000-student school system, even as county voters chose four new school board members for a nearly all-white body charged with running the well-regarded system. Howard's schools, like those in Baltimore, Montgomery and Charles counties, have been trending toward increasing diversity in classrooms for years. This academic year, white students made up 48.6 percent of total enrollment in the fall, according to an annual report.

Meet Larry WalkerRightfielder Larry Walker of the Colorado Rockies grew up in Canada. His favorite sport as a kid was ice hockey. "Baseball is fun," says Larry, "but if I could, I'd go play goalie."Instead, Larry became a pretty good baseball player! Lasseason, he was the National League MVP. He hit .366 and led the league in homers (49).Larry is a fun-loving guy who doesn't take himself or baseball toseriously. He has a secret talent. On March 18, 2003, MARGARET (Peggy) MARIE ECKERL, beloved wife of the late Edward J. Eckerl, devoted mother of Alice Walker and her husband Larry Sr., dear sister of Lorraine (nee Mitchell) Standiford and her husband Melvin, cherished grandmother of Larry Walker, Jr. & his wife Barbara, Charles Walker and his wife Kathleen and Andrea (nee Walker) Lutz and her husband Kris, loving great-grandmother of eight. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held 11 AM Monday at the family owned Evans Chapel of Memories-Parkville.
