Washington Bullets forward Larry Stewart will have surgery today to enhance the healing of the broken bone in his right foot, the team announced.Stewart, of Coppin State, suffered a fractured fifth metatarsal and will have a pin inserted to reinforce the bone. Team physician Steve Haas will perform the procedure, and Stewart is expected to return during training camp or the preseason.

Coppin State's basketball program got off to the right start last night as the team defeated Sparta of Czechoslovakia, 93-87, in its opening game.The Eagles were led by Reggie Isaac and Larry Stewart, who scored 27 points each. Isaac, Michael Johnson and James Mazyck led the team in assists with six each.Marcus Hammond was Coppin State's leading rebounder, pulling down six boards.Ivan Benes paced Sparta's offense, hitting all five of his three-point attempts and scoring 17 points.Coppin State will travel to Oklahoma next Saturday to play the University of Tulsa.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- First-place Coppin State (15-8, 11-1) spotted Florida A&M (10-11, 7-5) a 7-2 lead, but a 14-2 run fueled by Larry Stewart and Reggie Isaac took care of that, and the Eagles breezed to an 81-71 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win last night.This was the 11th straight triumph for Coppin State, which won it at the foul line, making 26 of 27. The Rattlers converted 15 of 23.Stewart finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds in 39 minutes, and Isaac added 29 points. The Eagles ended shooting 50 percent from the field to 40 percent for A&M. Their widest lead was 60-40, but the home team climbed back within 78-69 inside the last two minutes.

Larry Stewart, who helped Coppin State to 20-win seasons in 1989-90 and 1990-91, has been invited to try out by Washington Bullets and Dallas Mavericks.He will attend the Washington camp July 15 and the Dallas camp July 23.Stewart, 6 feet 7, considered an excellent jumper and post player, averaged 13.4 rebounds (fourth in the nation) and 23.8 points last season.He twice was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was winner of the 1991 John B. McLendon Trophy as the top player attending a historically black school (Bullets guard A.J. English won the 1990 award)

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Washington Bullets swingman Calbert Cheaney scored 24 points and 7-foot-7 center Gheorghe Muresan added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the white team in a 111-86 win over the blue team in a scrimmage last night at Shepherd College.Cheaney, who started at small forward and also played guard, was 11-for-16 from the field. Scott Skiles had 15 points and nine assists, Rex Chapman had a game-high 11 assists and Larry Stewart had 18 points for the white team.Doug Overton (18 points)

EL PASO, Texas -- Henry Hall scored 19 points to lead the University of Texas-El Paso over visiting Coppin State, 71-56, yesterday.Coppin (0-3) shot 33.1 percent from the field, compared with UTEP's 52.0, and made just two of 13 three-point attempts.Coppin failed to score for the first 13 minutes, 19 seconds of the second half. During the stretch, UTEP built on its 13-point halftime advantage, scoring nine straight points to put the game out of reach.The Eagles were led by Reggie Isaac, who scored a game-high 22 points, and Larry Stewart, who had 19 points and 15 rebounds.

SALISBURY -- Seniors Larry Stewart and Reggie Isaac guided Coppin State (18-9, 14-2) to a 94-69 victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (5-20, 3-13) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference meeting at the Wicomico Civic Center yesterday.Stewart had 28 points and 16 rebounds, and Isaac scored 24 points.Coppin scored the first five points of the game and led, 28-16, before UMES drew within 35-34 on a three-point basket by Shawn Johnson. Issac scored five in a 9-0 string by the Eagles, who led, 44-34, at the half.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Glenn Taggart's short jump shot with four seconds left carried North Carolina A&T (17-8, 10-5) to a 76-75 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over regular-season champion Coppin State (17-8, 13-2) at the Corbett Center last night.Larry Yarbray had given Coppin State a 75-74 lead when he made the first of two foul shots with 19 seconds to go. Senior Larry Stewart and freshman James Mazyck led the Eagles with 17 apiece.Taggert had 30 points for the Aggies, who clinched second place in the MEAC.

At the rate Coppin State has been beating opponents at home, it might be easier for visiting teams to begin mailing in their appearances.Coppin opened leads of as many as 24 points in the second half for a 99-76 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Howard University before an overflow homecoming crowd last night at the Coppin Center.Coppin forward Larry Stewart scored 36 points and guard Reggie Isaac had 32 -- 24 in the second half -- as the Eagles (12-8, 7-1) won their eighth straight game and 21st straight at the Coppin Center.
