The Orioles have apparently reached an impasse in their negotiations with broadcaster Jon Miller, according to sources close to the talks.Miller's contract as lead radio announcer for the team expired after this season, and the team has been negotiating with Miller's Baltimore-based agent, Ron Shapiro.Within the last 48 hours, team officials suggested that Miller meet with owner Peter Angelos, but Shapiro rejected the idea, Orioles sources said.Team sources also said that Shapiro gave the Orioles a deadline of Oct. 31. Miller will be leaving for an extended vacation on Monday.

Whatever is in the details of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Janet Marie Smith probably helped put it there. As the Orioles' vice president for stadium planning and development -- one of the first women in the country to hold such a position -- the 34-year-old Mississippi native and avid baseball fan has served since January 1989 as the liaison among the ballclub, the Maryland Stadium Authority and the project architect, HOK Sports Facilities Group.Taking her lead from Orioles majority owner Eli Jacobs and president Larry Lucchino, Smith has been instrumental in many of the major and minor decisions that effect the ballpark's look and feel, from the use of steel trusses rather than concrete for the upper deck to development of an "intimacy index" for the seating to making sure the Orioles weather vanes atop the scoreboard are "ornithologically correct."

With 160 games remaining, the Orioles already have topped the Toronto Blue Jays in one race: consecutive sellouts.Last night's sellout crowd of 46,447 -- the largest to see a game at Oriole Park -- marked the 61st straight time the ballpark has been sold out, setting a major-league record. The Orioles have sold out every game since May 23, 1992, and have topped single-game attendance marks in their first two games of this season.Orioles president Larry Lucchino said: "It's a great tribute to the fans, to the players and to the ballpark.

Read their lips: The Orioles have announced they will not raise ticket prices in 1991, their final season at Memorial Stadium.Unlike certain campaign promises, today's edict from club president Larry Lucchino is final. So, for the fourth time in five years, the Orioles resisted an increase in the cost of attending their games. The only price hike in that span came last season, but it is fully expected that there will be another increase in 1992 when the club moves into its new downtown stadium at Camden Yards.

Robert Fraley, his agent, will join Davis Wednesday. Mike Moye, an associate of Fraley's, also was scheduled to arrive today.Although he expressed a feeling of nervousness, Davis appeared calm and enthusiastic. "I'm shaking a little bit," he said, "but I don't know exactly why -- whether it's because of all the people, or because I'm cold."

It may or may not be coincidental that Glenn Davis and all of the Orioles' front office officials are in town for the first time since shortly after the season concluded. But there are indications that the first baseman is close to reaching an agreement on a contract for next year.Davis has just returned from a trip to Israel and Roland Hemond is less than 24 hours removed from a meeting of major-league general managers in Boca Raton, Fla.Hemond, who was accompanied to the GMs' meeting by assistants Frank Robinson and Doug Melvin, has not been directly involved in negotiations.
