Even though I was in -- or at least alive during -- the sexua revolution, I missed the battles, overlooked the grand strategy, never picked a side, and am not sure to this day what replaced what, and whether it was an improvement. And it wasn't because I had taken the veil or was working in Siberia. Not long after the Summer of Love, 1967, I was a student in Cambridge, Mass., as eager as anyone to be liberated from male domination, religious cant and political apathy. But, even with 30 years' distance and the advantage of the rear view mirror (in which objects may appear larger than they appear)

Anyone who watched the Golden Globes Sunday couldn't miss the countless camera pans of an ever-smiling new actress with a polite blond hairdo and rubbery Hollywood lips. Her name is Courtney Love, and, just in time to survive the media's Death of Grunge pronouncements, she is riding a massive career make-over, suddenly a distant cousin to the reckless bigmouth known for her blood-red lipstick and sloppy kinder-whore stylings. She's become Blanche to her former Baby Jane.Is Love's transformation from addict-widow to movie star the decade's greatest story of triumph?

I HATE the word "media." I'm a snob. I don't like being lumped in with Larry Flynt and Matt Drudge. I'm not sure they'd like being lumped in with me. But, as the Emperor Joseph said in "Amadeus," there it is.So, now that It is over, what has the mainstream press learned? (I define "It," in this case, as the impeachment saga.)Frankly, not an awful lot: Something's out of kilter in the news trade. The good news doctrines, the ones they have taught in journalism schools, since the wilder forces of journalism turned establishment, no longer apply.

The owners of Larry Flynt's Hustler Club were fined $525 by the city liquor board yesterday for violating the prohibition on sexual touching. Owner Jason C. Mohney was facing four charges of violating the city's adult entertainment rules, and the Board of Liquor License Commissioners found him guilty of two. It also reduced his fines by $400. "I realistically thought we would be found not guilty of everything," said Mohney's attorney, Peter Prevas, adding that he was considering an appeal.

WHO SAYS politics can't be must-see TV? The recall free-for-all in California outdoes "Friends" in terms of number of special guest co-stars (aka candidates), and "WWE Smackdown" in the amount of trash talk to look forward to. It plays as farce and as tragedy. A tearful Darrell Issa says he won't run for governor after he spent his own millions to fund the effort to recall Gov. Gray Davis. Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger announces his candidacy on Jay Leno's talk show, and spends the rest of the first weekend of campaigning playing to a national network television audience as large as that of some of his more successful films . Meanwhile, the state with a small-nation-size hole in its budget girds itself for another unbudgeted expense, running an election in which 193 people have applied to take part.

John McCain to make appearance on 'Saturday Night Live' tonight Live from New York, it's John McCain. Aides to the Republican presidential candidate said yesterday that McCain will appear tonight on Saturday Night Live, the late-night show that has been a must-watch for many during the political season. It might get a little awkward since the host is actor Ben Affleck, a supporter of Democratic candidate Barack Obama. The musical guest is singer David Cook. When McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, appeared on the show Oct. 18, SNL earned its best ratings in 14 years.

Opening campaign speech of new California gubernatorial candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger: My friends: I stand before you, tanned and powerful, with perfect white teeth, but also humbled by your applause. People ask me: "Ah-nult, why are you running for governor?" Very simple, my friends. To win! To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women! Dat is what politics is about, my friends! As you know, dere are dose who would deny me this prize.
