LARGO -- Archbishop Spalding senior pitcher Meghan Cowen said she was surprised when she was named a co-Most Valuable Player of the Maryland State Private School Softball Tournament championship game. Nobody else could have been. Cowen threw a no-hitter, facing just one batter over the minimum, to lead the No. 1 Cavaliers to an 11-0 victory over Pallotti of Prince George's County yesterday afternoon at Prince George's County Community College for its fifth consecutive title. "That was only the defensive part of the game," Cowen said.

Similar to their coaching colleagues throughout the state, the brain trusts of Woodlawn and Dulaney spent last weekend crunching the numbers, hoping a break here and good fortune there would lead to the realization of a state class 4A/3A indoor track championship at the 5th Regiment Armory last night. "I must have gone over the seeding sheets about 15 times," said Woodlawn coach Mike Sye. "I figured 45 points would win the boys meet. The team I was worried about, the team I thought could score that and more was Westminster."

A picture of a bluebird, that's all he was after. Not money and fame, not admirers and accolades, not the chance to quit his day job and take pictures full-time. Photographing birds was his passion; it always would be. One good shot out of 100 was worth it. And so it was that on a cold February day in 1979, Michael L. Smith set up a tripod in his Largo backyard, pointed his camera toward a fence post and waited. And waited. And waited. He wasn't trying to change his life. He wasn't trying to buy the house of his dreams.
