Planes fly into BWI Airport near North County High in Ferndale, and last night the 5-year-old school touched down with its first 4A state football championship, 23-6, over Largo of Prince George's County before nearly 4,000 fans.The game was at Al Laramore Field at Annapolis High. Annapolis, coached by Laramore, was the last Anne Arundel County team to win a state title, in 1978.Arundel, in 1975, was the only other Anne Arundel County team to win a state title.The No. 2 Knights (11-2) got a super night from ace back Topper Ellis and their defense, led by down lineman John Williams, who was in on 12 tackles and had a fumble recovery.

COLLEGE PARK -- When you're young, it doesn't take long to go from elation to frustration. For Long Reach, it took about 48 hours. On Thursday, the ninth-ranked Lightning boys basketball team capped an improbable comeback with a victory over top-ranked Lake Clifton. Yesterday, it couldn't get going early before falling to Prince George's County's Largo, 84-58, in the Class 3A state championship at Comcast Center. Klevin Pollard led Largo - ranked ninth in the Washington area - with 21 points.

One year after a heart-breaking loss to eventual Class 4A champion Arundel in the state semifinals, Largo of Prince George's County left no doubt as to who the top 4A team was this season.Largo built a 27-point halftime lead en route to a convincing 66-41 victory over Montgomery Blair in the title game yesterday at UMBC.It was the first state title for the Lions (25-2), who were making their first appearance in the final since 1990."We felt extremely confident coming into the game," Largo coach Robert Blair said.

COLLEGE PARK -- Robert Miller scored a game-high 31 points and Everett Scott and Arnett Young added 15 apiece as Largo defeated Prince George's County rival High Point, 83-76, in a Class 4A state semifinal last night at Cole Field House.Largo (17-4) will meet the winner of last night's other semifinabetween Meade and Springbrook for the state title tomorrow at 8.Despite being out-rebounded, the Lions held the Eagles to 37-percent field-goal shooting and forced 27 turnovers. When Old Mill was given the nod as the preseason favorite in Anne Arundel County, Patriots coach Pat Chance said she felt her team was a year away.Chance repeated that statement all season, as her team compiled a 22-2 record.Now, fourth-ranked Old Mill is just a game away from a state championship.Led by a balanced attack in which 11 players scored, second-seeded Old Mill (23-2) routed third-seeded Largo (19-6), 68-40, in a Class 4A state semifinal at Catonsville Community College yesterday.

A woman was killed and four children and a man were injured Saturday when two vehicles collided at an intersection in Largo, said Prince George's County police.Police said Adediwura Odu- tayo-Okanlawon, 38, of Bowie was driving a 1987 Mitsubishi van south on Harry S. Truman Drive about 6: 30 p.m. when it collided with a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am traveling west on Prince Place.The van overturned and Odutayo-Okanlawon, who suffered extensive injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Meade's dream season ended on a nightmare in the final three minutes as Largo (22-4) of Prince George's County won the state Class 4A championship at Cole Field House, 82-70.It was a battle of two schools that never had won a state title.Down by 16 in the third period, the Mustangs (21-5) of coach Butch Young cut the margin to nine to start the final period, trailing 65-56.With senior swingman Danny Sancomb (24 points) playing his heart out and scoring eight points in the third period, the Mustangs got within striking range and pulled within one point at 69-68 with 3:07 left.

For the second straight year, Old Mill has been dealt an immediate exit from the state Class 4A football playoffs.The second-seeded Patriots, who entered with some key injuries and the reverse momentum of an upset loss to Glen Burnie in their regular-season finale, fell to visiting and No. 7 Largo, 14-3, last night.The Lions (9-2) had touchdown runs of 5 and 2 yards from Eric Cariaga, Prince George's County's third-leading rusher with 1,500 yards this season. But he otherwise was held in check by a Patriots defense that played well.

Teriyana Fields led all scorers with 26 points and Largo High repeated as Poly Classic champions, racing past the host team, 81-53, last night in the championship game.Largo beat Poly, 70-56, last year in the inaugural tournament.Fields, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, led the way for an aggressive Largo team which intimidated a young Poly squad."Our biggest problem was they really rushed us mentally and forced us into turnovers," Engineers coach Mark Sawyer said.Fields scored 20 (including 9-of-10 from the foul line)
