A Lansdowne man was sentenced to life without parole in Baltimore County Circuit Court Monday for killing another man by striking him 24 times with a hatchet, according to the state's attorney's office. Larry Eugene Horton, 37 was found guilty in February of killing Ryan Wesley Jackson on Oct. 12, 2011. His sentence was handed down by Judge Jan Marshall Alexander Police said Horton killed Jackson inside his rented home on Rambo Court in Lansdowne before taking Jackson's body to the city.

A former volunteer firefighter who worked with youth at the Lansdowne fire department pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to producing and possessing child pornography. Anthony Maurice Cottle, 23, of Owings Mills, faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison after engaging in sexually activity with two boys and filming the encounters. Authorities recovered more than 600 images of child pornography from Cottle's computer and cell phone, which included images of additional victims, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's office.

New Town assistant coach Tony Biggers, trainer Ferron Carter and MarylandHoops.net analyst Edgar Walker are teaming up to host a boys basketball showcase Friday and Saturday at Leadership Through Athletics in Lansdowne. On Friday, there will be discussion on recruiting, including tips on social media, NCAA academic standards and more. On Saturday, players will be measured and tested before going through several drills and then scrimmaging in front of several Division II and III coaches.

A Baltimore City police officer was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation after he attempted to alert residents about a two-alarm fire in the Bolton Hill neighborhood Saturday afternoon. Fire department spokesman Capt. Roman Clark said the officer suffered minor injuries. He was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure. The blaze in the 1800 block of Eutaw Place began around 2:30 p.m. and was placed under control about two hours later, he said.

Baltimore County police are investigating a homicide after a victim in a Lansdowne double shooting died days later. James Townsend, 33, of the 2900 block of Bero Road, died Wednesday after suffering medical complications after he and a second man were shot April 27 outside Townsend's home by two suspects wearing masks, police said. The medical examiner ruled Townsend's death a homicide Thursday. The other male victim was treated and released from Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.

For the first time in about a month-and-a-half, Brent Arrington got a good night's sleep. Since late May, Arrington has patiently waited for Mississippi Valley State to release him from his scholarship. His request was repeatedly denied, making what should have been a relaxing summer break an exceedingly stressful time for the Lansdowne grad. But last Friday, after his father spoke with someone from the NCAA and pleaded Arrington's case, the 6-foot-2, 182-pound guard was released from his scholarship.

Tevin Hanner had 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Millers (3-0), who led by 25 midway through the fourth quarter. Nick LaGuerre had 20 points for Lansdowne. No. 10 Oakland Mills 79, Hammond 44: The host Scorpions (5-0) had another huge third quarter, scoring 21points to beat the Bears (3-2). Greg Whittington finished with a game-high 28 points.

Proximity to Interstate-95, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and the Baltimore Beltway was one of the factors in the move by Special Olympics Maryland from its current location in Linthicum to a business park off Washington Boulevard. Merritt Properties announced Sept. 7 that Maryland Special Olympics is moving to 3701 Commerce Drive in Merritt's Beltway Business Community. Relocating to the west side of Baltimore will provide Special Olympics Maryland with easier access to a large part of the state, according to a release from Merritt.

Two men were shot in Lansdowne on Saturday night, and Baltimore County police are looking for possible suspects. The victims were reported around the 3000 block of Bero Road, police spokesman Lt. Robert McCullough said. They were transported to local hospitals. As of Sunday night, one man had been released from the hospital and the other was listed in serious condition, McCullough said. Officers in Baltimore County's Violent Crimes division are investigating a robbery and shooting in the Lansdowne area Thursday. Officers were called to the 2900 block of Lakebrook Circle at about 8 p.m. and found a 32-year-old man who said he was robbed by two mean wearing masks. Officers have yet to determine what was stolen. The victim, whose address has not been released, was shot in the leg during the incident and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. His injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

A man was found fatally shot in a field near Lansdowne on Saturday morning, according to Baltimore County police. Cpl. John Wachter of the county police reported that the victim had been shot in the back. Someone called police at 6:37 a.m. after seeing the man lying in the field at the intersection of Illinois Avenue and Annapolis Road. Police did not have an identification of the victim or suspects in the case. Homicide units are continuing to investigate the shooting.

A little more than five years ago, Ryan Henderson was nearing the peak of the sport he loved the most. He had won his race the night before, and he was just a day away from turning professional in motorcycle racing. But Henderson would never earn the professional status he coveted. Racing along the Seaford, Del., track's dirt surface, Henderson caught his foot in a hole and was ripped away from his bike. The fall broke his neck and back, paralyzing him from the chest down. He spent the next month in the hospital, and he said it took him four years of rehab to "rebuild myself.
