NASA awarded a contract Monday to Science Systems and Applications Inc. to help observe the atmosphere and the sun. The job is worth up to $103 million for the Lanham-based company. Science Systems will design and maintain technology orbiting the Earth to monitor atmospheric and solar conditions. It will also help NASA's earth science division perform satellite missions, prepare research proposals and support software engineering. The work will be performed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt from April 1 through April 30, 2017.

Lanham-based Group 1 Software has agreed to be purchased by Pitney Bowes Inc. in a deal worth about $382 million that will combine a cash-rich developer of mail-management software with the world's largest provider of mailing and shipping equipment. Group 1, which has 600 employees worldwide, 215 of them in Maryland, will keep its headquarters in Lanham and be operated as a wholly owned subsidiary. Stamford, Conn.-based Pitney Bowes said it expects "a handful" of Group 1 employees to lose their jobs as a result of the transaction.

A Washington County man was sentenced in Baltimore's federal court yesterday to more than 12 years in prison for robbing two Anne Arundel banks last year. Kenneth M. Lanham, 43, of Boonsboro pleaded guilty last September to robbing Bank Annapolis in Severna Park and First Union Bank in Linthicum in January last year. Prosecutors said that both times Lanham handed the tellers a bank note demanding they give him "all strapped money" and "no dye packs." He took $1,382 from Bank Annapolis and $2,280 from First Union, prosecutors said.

An Essex car mechanic has filed a $14.5 million lawsuit against Baltimore County and three police officers, alleging that the officers beat him so severely last year that he was hospitalized for six days. David C. Lanham of the 500 block of Dorsey Ave. alleges that Officers Shawn Needham, Sean Salisbury and Daniel Budlor arrived at his home July 9, 1999, after they were called by his girlfriend's daughter, Tiffany Irwin, and Irwin's boyfriend, Henry Smith. Irwin and Smith told officers that Lanham had assaulted Irwin, according to the suit filed in Baltimore County Circuit Court.

Cathy Brittain and Charlotte Leake might still be driving taxicabs if it weren't for Marion Lanham. But today the two women are back in college -- thanks to Dr. Lanham, they say.Dr. Lanham, a Harford Community College instructor who is blind, doesn't take any credit for the women's pursuit of education. "They may say they were influenced, but nobody does it unless they themselves want to," she said.Mrs. Brittain of Fallston used to drive Dr. Lanham weekly from Harford County to the Maryland Penitentiary in Baltimore, where she taught communications classes.

A 52-year-old man found dead early Friday on the side of a road in Severna Park may have suffered a heart attack, according to county police who said the victim was scheduled for a series of tests later that morning.A northbound motorist spotted the body of Samuel Marion Lanham of the 200 block of Dauntsey Drive about 1 a.m. on a shoulder in the 800 block of Ritchie Highway.The body was taken to the state Medical Examiner's office in Baltimore for an autopsy.Police said Mr. Lanham's wife, Nancy, told them her husband was a heart patient who was scheduled for tests later that morning.
