PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - Fifteen years ago, it was a must-win situation for the United States national team. Yesterday's match against Trinidad and Tobago didn't have that kind of pressure, but it still proved a perfect start to the final round of World Cup qualifying for the Americans. Facing a determined Trinidad team supported by a raucous crowd in wilting playing conditions, a composed U.S. squad rode a sparkling performance by goalkeeper Kasey Keller and opportunistic goals by Eddie Johnson and Eddie Lewis to emerge a 2-1 victor in the CONCACAF region game.

The Australians were complaining Friday about the threadbare state of the Ruimsig Stadium field in the South African town of Roodepoort. The Americans, meanwhile, were sweating out an injury to starting striker Jozy Altidore. The two countries play each other at the stadium today in the final World Cup tuneup for both, but it is Altidore's situation that is the more troubling. The striker's right ankle was hurt during training Wednesday, and Friday evening U.S. Soccer still had him listed as "day-to-day."

Italy's A.C. Milan, one of the world's richest and best known professional soccer organizations, has committed to operating two weeklong soccer camps in the United States this summer, one at Towson University. The camps are believed to be a first in this country for a foreign pro team, some of which are beginning to view America as a source of talented, cheap young prospects. The Italian club, which carries status in the soccer world comparable to that of the New York Yankees in baseball, will run a second camp at Radford University in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.

Manchester City had to make a managerial change for Saturday night's game. Instead of Manchester City head coach Roberto Mancini, the team was managed by assistant coach Brian Kidd , who was a standout player with Manchester United. Mancini, a former star player for Sampdoria, left the team to return to Italy because of his father's health problems. Mancini was manager of Inter Milan from 2004 to 2008, including the record-breaking season in 2006-07 when Inter totaled 97 points, an Italian League record and, until 2009-10, a European record.
