COLLEGE PARK -- LaMont Jordan, the Atlantic Coast Conference's third leading rusher with 121 yards a game, has a sore right hamstring and is listed as day-to-day for 3-0 Maryland's clash with No. 9 Georgia Tech (2-1) Thursday night on ESPN.Coach Ron Vanderlinden said yesterday that Jordan woke up with the hamstring bothering him yesterday morning."He was only half-speed in practice," Vanderlinden said. Ron Vanderlinden's second recruiting effort has already netted commitments from seven players, with the early emphasis being on receivers and secondary players, two areas where Maryland needs immediate help.The Terps expect to get three players from Anacostia High in Washington: wide receiver Jay Chapman, defensive back Tyrone Stewart and linebacker Bobby Addison. Stewart's father, Willie, is the coach at Anacostia, the same program that this year sent the Terps two-way prospect Eric James.

Ron Vanderlinden, Maryland's new football coach, recruited some areas where the Terps usually haven't gone for players, like Michigan and Illinois.And Baltimore.When the letter of intent signing period opens today, the Terps expect to make official the oral commitments of 22 high school players. Three are from Michigan and two are from Illinois, reflecting the Big Ten background of Vanderlinden and several members of his staff, but there are also three players from the Baltimore area.Mount St. Joseph running back Aaron Thompson, The Sun's Offensive Player of the Year, and two other members of the All-Metro team, Arundel quarterback Erik Lipton and Wilde Lake safety Tony Jackson, represent the biggest cache of local talent headed to College Park since Joe Krivak was coach.

Big running event yesterday in Florida, the Disney Marathon. Participants ran through Disney's four theme parks. But not all made it. There were these disqualifications: Pulling her version of a Rosie Ruiz, Mary Poppins opened her umbrella and flew over part of the course. Pluto, seeing that Goofy was allowed to run, tried to enter but was told, "No dogs allowed." Pluto was understandably confused. Snow White veered too far off course in search of some SPF 60. Aladdin's first-place finish was disallowed when it was learned the Genie had granted his wish for a victory.

Last week, she was supposed to advance her boxing career with a match against Daisy D at Bums Beach, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., nightclub. Then it changed from a boxing match to a wrestling match. The promoter had high hopes. "We're out to give South Florida fight fans a classy night out," Damon Feldman said. Who could argue? A wrestling match in a nightclub featuring the former Trash Queen of skating?
