Ellen G. Lally, a former reporter who later became an Eastern Shore caterer, died of cancer Sunday at The Pines, an Easton hospice. She was 73. She was born Ellen Gordon Needles in Baltimore and spent her early years in Buckingham Manor, a Charles Street apartment house. During World War II, she moved with her family to Albany, Ga., where her father was serving in the Army. After returning to Baltimore in 1947, she attended Garrison Forest School, and graduated in 1951 from the Emma Willard School, a Troy, N.Y., boarding school.

James F. Lally, an affable, fun-loving photographer for the old News American who began his career at the newspaper in 1947 as a copy boy, died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital in Easton of kidney failure. He was 68.After retiring from the now-defunct Hearst paper in 1980, where he had been a photographer since the early 1950s, he was a staff photographer for the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels. He retired again in 1994.Mr. Lally had lived in St. Michaels since 1978."He was a reliable old-time newspaper photographer who always got the picture you wanted," said William Stump, former News American editorial page editor.

Her neighbors at Bush River Boat Works in Perryman vanished months ago at first chill. Still, she has the company of Squeaky and Fred, the resident geese. And her husband of 28 years, Patrick Lally, stops by often.

The president of the education software company LeapFrog SchoolHouse has resigned in response to a company investigation into its $1 million sale to the Prince George's County schools in June, corporate officials announced yesterday. Bob Lally's resignation is the first major fallout from a transaction that has focused scrutiny on schools chief Andre J. Hornsby and his relationship with a saleswoman for the $40-million-a-year Emeryville, Calif., company. Lally resigned "in response to an internal investigation under LeapFrog's code of conduct relating to a commission paid to a sales representative," the company's parent company, LeapFrog Enterprises Inc., said in a statement.

Baltimore County police were searching yesterday for the driver of a blue Mercedes that hit a 15-year-old boy the night before as he tried to help an accident victim on Paper Mill Road.Dan Lally of the 14000 block of Quinn Lane in Baldwin was on his way home from Hunt Valley Mall with a friend at 10:10 p.m. Friday when they saw a car that had run off the road and into a tree on Paper Mill Road near Green Branch Drive in Phoenix, said Cpl. Thomas McCreer.Young Lally, a junior at Loyola High School in Towson, said he was at the driver's-side door of the car when the blue Mercedes came around the curve and hit him, pinning his left leg against the tree the first car had hit."

A Pikesville man has been charged with animal cruelty after driving a car through his neighborhood while his 11-month-old Chesapeake Bay retriever ran alongside on a leash.The dog, named Barkley, was treated for severe lesions to his paws at a Reisterstown veterinary office after an officer discovered bleeding paws -- the pads worn off by the rough road, Baltimore County police said.Barkley's owner, Scott Eckrote, 24, of the first block of Tentmill Lane, also was charged with possession of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia after his arrest Thursday night.

A burglary suspect found sleeping in an Arnold neighborhood had an unusual assortment of items in his car, according to county police -- a police badge, a rubber mask, a rifle and some marijuana.Officer James McDermott found the man slumped over in the passenger seat of his Volkswagen shortly before 2 a.m. Monday on Harmony Avenue.The man had no identification, but he gave McDermott his name -- Peter Joseph Lally -- and the officer found that he was wanted by Baltimore County police on charges in a burglary Feb. 23 of Lally's uncle's Towson law office, police said.
