EDGEWOOD - Christina Timmons remembers the endless nights four years ago when her newborn son was awakened constantly by the gambling, whistling and yelling outside the front door of her Harford County apartment. She looks around today at the Village at Lakeview's well-tended grounds and smiles. "It's cleaned up a lot. It's a lot quieter," she said. The Village at Lakeview, consisting of 223 subsidized apartments, is a fresh face in the U.S. 40 community. After decades of deterioration, the complex was targeted two years ago by the county for a drastic overhaul.

Lakeview Terrace starts out mixing social burlesques and melodrama and ends up one more failed thriller about men behaving badly - and stupidly. Interracial couple Chris and Lisa Mattson (Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington) move to an L.A. suburb and almost immediately suspect their neighbor, Abel Turner (Samuel L. Jackson), a veteran black cop, is plotting to drive them out of the neighborhood. This movie is so obvious, the audience never suspects: It knows. Abel reacts like a pop-eyed fool to the realization that Chris is not a mover, but Lisa's husband.

There was a time when the senior citizens who call Lakeview Towers home lived comfortably. They would adorn the hallways with Christmas lights and welcome mats, and while away the evening hours with bingo games and courtyard gossip. No more. In recent years, the elderly occupants of one of the city's high-rise public housing buildings complain, the dangers of the street have spilled into their isolated enclave - a result, they say, of lax security and an influx of younger, disabled residents, some of them recovering drug addicts, into the once-tranquil and seniors-only complex.
