When the rector of a downtown congregation asked his flock to be generous, it took only two weeks to raise nearly $2.5 million for his 1854 church. Along with a new roof, heating plant and state-of-the-art plumbing, Emmanuel Episcopal Church got a splendid pipe organ. The Right Rev. Eugene Sutton, bishop of Maryland, will bless the church's new $850,000 Letourneau pipe organ at Sunday's 10:30 a.m. service. Built in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, the organ's myriad of flute, trumpet, viola and oboe pipes were lifted into a chamber overlooking the church's high altar in late winter.

Easter will be a hectic day for us this year. We are expecting our 4-year-old granddaughter and 2-year-old grandson at our house. My husband and I will be in charge of the Easter egg hunt and will hide eggs all over the backyard. Then, once the little ones have uncovered the colorful treasures, we'll move inside for a holiday meal. Because there won't be much time for cooking, I have decided to make as many dishes as possible in advance. Right away I thought of serving the glorious French stew known as navarin printanier.

They've traded craggy slopes for meadows full of tasty weeds, swapped the incessant whirring of machinery for the gentle clucking of chickens. But in the bargain, they've had to sacrifice the freedom of roaming 850 acres for the fenced-in life. Life has changed for Carroll County's feral goats since Humane Society workers began rounding them up from a quarry near Westminster in January. But the goats still act like goats. They eat whatever they please, butt heads and scurry when a stranger approaches.
