The Lineboro Volunteer Fire Department recently purchased the "jaws of life" rescue tool for $12,000. The ladies auxiliary of the department contributed $5,000.Firefighters have been attending training sessions for the past few weeks to learn to use the tool.The department answers a lot of calls in York County, Pa., many of which involve entrapment rescues, said John Krebs, fire chief.

Services for Faith Burk Stengel, who for many years helped run her family's Long Green general store and also served as a postal clerk and letter carrier, will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. John's Lutheran Church, Phoenix.Mrs. Stengel, who was 70, died of heart disease complications Friday at her Long Green home.Born in Baltimore, Mrs. Stengel attended elementary school in Long Green and was a graduate of Towson High School.She grew up working in her family's Burk's Store, at Manor and Long Green roads.

Taneytown Volunteer Fire Co. named Mervin Staub as Firefighter of the Year for 1998 at its annual banquet.Staub was honored for his countless hours of fund-raising activities.Also honored with Citizen Awards were Tony Bitzel and Jim Fleischman for helping to get residents out of an apartment fire in August.The company received money from several sources: $35,000 from the Ladies Auxiliary, $17,000 from the city of Taneytown; $18,000 from bingo; $2,000 from the Junior Fire Department; and $2,900 from the 300 Club.

ELIZABETH PAULINE DOUGHERTY, 86, of Richmond, formerly of Baltimore, MD., passed away January 16, 2006. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Charles A. Dougherty, Sr; a son, Charles A Dougherty, Jr. and wife, Karen K; one grandson, Sean Michael Dougherty; and one niece. She was a member of St. Mathias Episcopal Church in Maryland, also serving with the Ladies Auxiliary for 47 years. A graveside service will be held 1 P.M. Saturday, January 21, 2006 in Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens, Baltimore, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mathias Church, 6400 Belair Rd., Baltimore, MD 21206.

Services for homemaker Rachel A. Cunningham of Glen Burnie will take place at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Kirkley Funeral Home.Mrs. Cunningham, 79, died May 3 at North Arundel Hospital after a lengthy illness.She was originally from Arbutus. Her interests included flowers, activities at home, and being a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Raveo Post 195.Survivors include her husband, Bernard P. Cunningham; two sons, Vernon D. Woody and Howard A. Woody of Severn; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Members of the VFW Department of Maryland gathered in Ocean City for their annual convention two weeks ago, a week before last week's Maryland State Firemen's Association Convention in Ocean City. As the VFW Post 8185 folks returned to Port, the Water Witch fire company firemen and their families left for their week at the beach. At the Firemen's Convention Memorial Service Sunday, June 17, Shirley Sentman's mom, the late Dot Brown, was remembered and honored for her service to the WWFC Ladies Auxiliary.

The Carroll County Volunteer Firemen's Association and Carroll County Ladies Auxiliary each elected officers at their conventions Saturday at the Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department.Firemen's Association officers for 1995-1996 are Michael Stewart of Pleasant Valley, president; Gene Curfman of Harney, first vice president; Gene Smith of New Windsor, second vice president; Glenn Hay of Pleasant Valley, treasurer; and Ralph Dull of Manchester, secretary.The Ladies Auxiliary's officers are Brenda Hay of Pleasant Valley, president; Ellen Rodgers of Harney, first vice president; Dorothy Rue of New Windsor, second vice president; Pat Spangler of Reese, secretary; Pat Orlove or Westminster, treasurer; Helen Korman of Hampstead, historian; and Linda Black of Manchester, chaplain.
