The two coaches sat together under the shade of UMBC's Stadium Complex. The coaches, men with more than 60 years of experience between them, occasionally glanced down at the women's lacrosse practice in motion, talking to pass the time. The reality is that Pete Caringi II, UMBC's soccer coach, and Don Zimmerman, the school's lacrosse coach, share more in common than a profession. Both men have earned their reputations through the respected programs they have built, through the wins and championships they have achieved and the countless number of athletes they have coached.

A Friday night celebration had a nice ring to it for the Loyola men's lacrosse team. One with 34 jewels, in fact. The Greyhounds received their NCAA championship rings Friday for beating Maryland, 9-3, on May 28 in Foxborough, Mass. In addition to the jewels, the bands feature a large Loyola "L" in the middle. "This is an opportunity tonight to remember the journey this team went on," coach Charley Toomey said before presenting the rings. "This is a time to remember the successful team this was. " The Greyhounds handed out team awards before the ring ceremony.

Craig R. Unruh, an advertising executive and avid waterfowl hunter, died Sept. 14 of colon cancer at Gilchrist Hospice in Towson. He was 61. Mr. Unruh was born in Baltimore and raised on Tunbridge Road in Homeland. He was a 1969 graduate of St. Paul's School, where he had been an outstanding midfielder on the lacrosse team and a key player in the 1969 state championship game. As a student at the University of Maryland, he was a starting midfielder his freshman year, and after earning a bachelor's degree in 1973, continued playing the sport for the University, Chesapeake and Carling lacrosse clubs.

James McCormick "Mickey" Webster Jr., an outstanding lacrosse attackman who was co-captain of the 1959 Johns Hopkins University national championship team and later became an insurance and financial planning executive, died Friday of pancreatic cancer at Gilchrist Hospice in Towson. He was 75. "Mickey was an exalted figure in the game. There are All-Americans every year who deserve it, but he was more than just an All-American, he was one of lacrosse's greats," said Bill Tanton, former longtime sports editor of The Evening Sun. "When it comes to feeding, his name is synonymous with the great Hopkins teams of the late 1950s.

Swimming Long sets Paralympic record in 100 fly Jessica Long , who grew up in Middle River, broke a Paralympic record in winning the S8 women's 100-meter butterfly Thursday in London. Long, who had both lower legs amputated before age 2, finished in 1 minute, 10.32 seconds - 1.21 seconds in front of Kateryna Istomina of Ukraine. Shengnan Jiang of China was third, 2.96 seconds behind Long. Long, who won four golds in 2008 and three in 2004, will swim in as many as nine events in the London Games, which began Wednesday.

STX LLC , the Baltimore-based lacrosse equipment maker, is starting a women's lacrosse team for recent college grads and launching a Web series to document events leading to the inaugural season.  Hoping to boost brand awareness and advance the growth of the nation's fastest growing team sport, the Pigtown-based company is seeking top female athletes for the "elite level" STX team. In the first round, the company will select three team captains. The winners, who can be from anywhere in the U.S. but who will live together in Baltimore in STX-provided housing, will be featured in the original web series, "Love for the Game.

Calvert Hall lacrosse standout Stephen Kelly is in Turku, Finland this month as a member of the U.S. under-19 men's national team, which is competing in the Federation of International Lacrosse U-19 men's world championships.  The U.S. has won all six titles since the tournament began in 1988. Kelly, a two-time first-team All-Metro midfielder, will share his experiences with a daily blog as he tries to bring home a gold medal.   Hello everyone! The last day and half have been incredible and one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Rodgers Forge Elementary School Principal Missy Fanshaw has seen her fair share of triumph this summer. Her son, Patrick, is a junior attackman on Loyola University's national champion lacrosse team. Andrew, her middle son, helped Calvert Hall to an MIAA lacrosse championship this spring, and youngest son Michael won the MYLA championship with his Kelly Post youth lacrosse team. Now Fanshaw, who took over as principal at Rodgers Forge in January after Susan Deise retired late last year, can add a sterling achievement of her own to the mantel.

MLS Beckerman named All-Star a sixth time Real Salt Lake captain Kyle Beckerman (Arundel) was named Sunday as one of 18 Major League Soccer All-Stars who will face Chelsea FC on July 25 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. Beckerman was selected to the team by D.C. United and MLS All-Star coach Ben Olsen , having missed out on being named to the All-Star First XI voted on by fans. The 30-year-old defensive midfielder from Crofton has four goals and four assists in 19 starts and has received All-Star recognition in six straight seasons.
