Virginia coach Dom Starsia has always hedged a little over talk of parity in college lacrosse, but he is slowly crossing over. Lacrosse is becoming more like the NFL. There are consistent winners every year, but the team that gets hot at the end has a good shot at winning the title. No. 3 Duke is on the comeback trail after a slow start. No. 12 Johns Hopkins had a strong rebound performance against Virginia a week ago. And the No. 13 Cavaliers (5-4) don't have a signature win all season.

Each week, The Baltimore Sun publishes a Q&A with an area college lacrosse player to help you become more acquainted with the player and his/her team. Today's guest is Navy defender Emily Mellin , who played in high school at nearby St. Mary's in Annapolis. A team captain, she leads a defense allowing just 7.22 goals per game for the No. 14 and three-time defending Patriot League champion Midshipmen (11-1). Off to a 5-0 start, Maryland is the unanimous top-ranked team in Division I, leads the nation in offense with an average of 16 goals, and trails only Hofstra as the stingiest defense in the country after allowing just 6.8 goals per game . But this season's success - which includes a 12-10 defeat of reigning national champion Loyola, which knocked off the Terps in last year's NCAA tournament final - could worm its way into the players' egos,...

In a weekend littered with upsets, the top-ranked Maryland men's lacrosse team made sure it was not the biggest name on that list. Every year in college lacrosse there seems to be a Delaware, Lehigh or Loyola, a team no one figured to be one of the nation's top contenders. Could Penn State be that team in 2013? There wasn't anything unusual about the Nittany Lions' 11-6 season-opening win against Michigan, but Penn State drew some attention with a 15-12 upset of No. 10 Denver on Feb.17. Then when Penn State took No. 3 Notre Dame to overtime in a 10-9 loss Sunday - a game that featured four lead changes and seven ties - the lacrosse world took notice.

One-score decisions continue to be unkind to the Navy men's lacrosse team. For the second time in as many contests, the Midshipmen squandered an opportunity to cement a victory in the final 30 seconds. On Sunday, that missed chance opened the door for host Georgetown to emerge with a 9-8 win in overtime before an announced attendance of 2,613 at Multi-Sport Field in Washington. Junior attackman Jeff Fountain , a Lutherville native and St. Paul's graduate, took a feed from redshirt junior midfielder Zac Guy, curled around the left post and deposited the ball behind senior goalkeeper Nolan Hickey to even the Hoyas' record at 1-1.
