It's time for the adults who lead the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference to do the grown-up thing and end the David vs. Goliath farces to determine conference champions. Here's a quick recap of last week's action: Officials stripped the Harford Tech girls lacrosse team of its Susquehanna Division championship and suspended its coach after they decided last week to not play C. Milton Wright, the Chesapeake Division champions, in the UCBAC conference championship game. The UCBAC, as the conference is most commonly known, consists of all the public high schools in Harford and Cecil counties divided into two divisions to compete for championships in almost all sports; football is a notable exception.

The Howard Community College track program competed at the NJCAA National D-III Track and Field Championships last weekend at Alfred State College in New York. The men placed fourth out of 20 teams entered; the women were 13th. This was the strongest showing of the programs in their history. Calder Walker led the team with two first-place finishes. Walker won the 200 meters in 22.07 and the 400 meters (48.07). He was one of two double winners for the meet and he earned All-American status for each event.

Howard Community College The Howard Community College track team open its outdoor season March 17 at the Lynchburg College Invitational in Virginia. Sunny, warm temperatures made for some qualifying marks for the Dragons for their national championships in May. The day started off with three men qualifying for the 10k. Filagot Dinku placed second overall with a time of 33 minutes, 25 seconds. Rafi Fernandez placed 10th (36:18) and Jamie Lara was 12th (36:35). Jessica Garry placed 12th in the shot put (10.08 meters)

Want to know how important Nancy Turnblacer has been to Loyola College's run of four consecutive NCAA women's tennis tournament berths? "I'll need two players to replace her," said Loyola coach Rick McClure. "I miss her already, and she hasn't even left yet. We'll find out next Thursday who we'll be playing in the NCAAs." Severna Park's Turnblacer has put together a 59-39 career singles record while playing No. 1 all four years for the Greyhounds, and she is 54-21 in doubles. Turnblacer has dominated the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on the court and in the classroom for four years, being a two-time league MVP and a three-time All-MAAC Academic selection.

Thomas Kenny Carey Sr., a retired teacher and lacrosse coach, died of injuries sustained in a fall and complications from cancer Feb. 26 at Gilchrist Hospice Care. He was 82. Born in Baltimore, he attended Windsor Hills Elementary and Garrison Junior High schools. He was a 1946 graduate of Polytechnic Institute, where he played ice hockey. While a student at Loyola College, he married Mary Esther Carroll, whom he met at the Cahill Recreation Center near his boyhood home in Walbrook.

To raise scholarship money for its women's lacrosse program, Anne Arundel Community College will play host Sunday to the school's first 3-on-3 Women's Lacrosse Tournament on the Arnold campus.Modeled after a three-on-three format designed by the University of Maryland women's lacrosse coaching staff and team members, the round-robin tournament will begin at 8:45 a.m. with a demonstration by members of the Baltimore Club Lacrosse team."We want to have something to give to players who choose to attend Anne Arundel Community College," said James Shuck, coach of the Pioneers women's lacrosse team, who added that he "fell in love with theidea" after observing play on the College Park campus last November.

Five members of Anne Arundel Community College's women's lacrosse team will participate in this weekend's South Tournament on the Arnold campus.Kristy Moltz and Heather Riley of South River, Emily Chones of Annapolis, Christie Griffith of North County and Wendy Baxter of Broadneck will take part in the event, which is "a steppingstone to a possible selection to the U.S. national team," said Pioneers coach Jim Shuck.Moltz, Chones and Baxter will play on the Maryland College Women's Lacrosse Association Team 1.There will be 13 to 20 squads consisting of 12 players each.

David Paul Staley, who had worked in marketing and been a champion lacrosse player, died Sunday of heart failure at the Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. The former Columbia resident was 50. Born in Baltimore and raised in Columbia, Mr. Staley was a 1979 graduate of Atholton High School, where he played football and lacrosse, wrestled, and ran cross-country. He earned a bachelor's degree in marketing and business administration in 1983 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
