In his first four seasons as coach of his alma mater, Noone guided the Seahawks to a state championship in 2009 and a second state title-game appearance last spring. His resume added an unexpected and most gratifying 2012 season. Losing six starters from last year's team and working with a young roster that included just eight seniors, the No. 8 Seahawks exceeded all expectations in going 20-0 and winning the program's second Class 4A-3A state championship. The Seahawks had to weather plenty of storms to win the tough Anne Arundel County crown.

Although a Charlottesville, Va., jury found one man - athlete George Huguely V - criminally responsible for the beating death of Yeardley Love, his former girlfriend and fellow lacrosse player at the University of Virginia, the young woman's mother wants to hold his coaches culpable, too. Sharon Love, of Cockeysville, filed a $29.5 million civil suit this month against the state of Virginia, which operates the university; the school's athletic...

Former Navy coach Richie Meade is expected to be named the first men's lacrosse coach at Furman, Inside Lacrosse reported Tuesday. Meade and an official in Furman's athletic department declined to comment when reached; however, the Furman athletic department has confirmed that it has planned a news conference for Saturday in Boston to name its first head coach. Inside Lacrosse reported on April 20 that Meade led a list of candidates that the newly formed South Carolina Division I men's program was considering, and sources have told Inside Lacrosse that Meade visited campus last week and has been in negotiations with the university.

Four players or coaches with ties to the Maryland Terrapins are among the eight person class to be inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in October, US Lacrosse announced Wednesday. Navy coach Cindy Timchal, who has more wins than any other college lacrosse coach, guided the Terps to eight of their NCAA titles. Jen Adams and Kelly Amonte Hiller were national players of the year and three-time first-team All-Americans on some of Timchal's national title teams. Brian Dougherty was a two-time All-American for the Terps and twice named the nation's best goalie.

When Maryland lacrosse coach Cathy Reese told her 5-year-old son Brody last week that the Terrapins might play Loyola and coach Jen Adams in the NCAA quarterfinals, Brody was all smiles. "Mommy, that's so great. You can play each other and tie and both go to the championships. " Unfortunately for the close friends, Brody's wishful scenario cannot come true. Only one can move on from Saturday's noon quarterfinal in College Park to the final four Memorial Day weekend in Stony Brook, N.Y. Facing each other won't be easy.

• On a Notre Dame men's lacrosse team where everyone contributes, Clarksville's Jim Marlatt has grabbed the spotlight. The River Hill grad had a career-high five-point day in the NCAA first-round win over Yale. But it's depth that has been the key: 19 different players have hit the back of the net for the Irish, who play Virginia on Sunday in the NCAA quarterfinals. "We're just looking for the opening guy and whoever that guys is at the end of the play is going to get the goal," said Marlatt, a 2012 Big East Conference first-team honoree.

The make-up of the South River boys lacrosse roster -- eight seniors, four freshmen and the rest sophomores and juniors -- may give the appearance of a rebuilding season. But the No. 10 Seahawks never thought of it that way. Working hard, accepting roles, and simply wanting to be part of the team has led them to a 15-0 mark heading into the Class 4A-3A East region playoffs. Rebuilding season? Make it a special season.  After wrapping up the tightly-contested Anne Arundel County crown, the Seahawks defeated No. 9 Glenelg 14-9 on Tuesday to capture the District V championship.  Paul Noone, in his fifth season as head coach with a state title already on his resume from 2009, has watched his mostly young group of players improve and further develop into a top-notch team each day. With the postseason approaching, Noone joined us as this week's Coachspeak guest.

For Navy's Cindy Timchal, coaching in the NCAAtournament for a 24th time is just as exciting as it was back in 1983 when she took Northwestern to its first tournament. “It never gets old,” Timchal said. “It's always exciting, because you're always taking a new group of young athletes and it's exciting for them.” Timchal is the first coach to take three different programs - Northwestern, Maryland and Navy - to the NCAA tournament. Although their program is just five years old, the Midshipmen are in the tournament for a third straight time, advancing through a play-in game after winning the Patriot League.

Sharon Love has sued the University of Virginia men's lacrosse coach and other athletic officials for negligence in the 2010 death of her daughter, Yeardley, saying they ignored previous violent, drunken behavior by the player who was ultimately convicted of murdering her. "It was well known to the players and coaches on the UVA men's and women's lacrosse teams that [George] Huguely's alcohol abuse and erratic, aggressive behavior was increasingly getting out of control, especially his obsession with Love and his aggressiveness and threats to Love," according to the civil suit filed this week in Louisa County Circuit Court by Sharon Love of Cockeysville.
