The strain on Loyola coach Charley Toomey and Maryland coach John Tillman isn't limited to determining a winner and loser in Saturday's showdown between the top-ranked Greyhounds and the No. 3 Terps . For the past week, the close friends have mutually agreed to refrain from contacting each other. "The one thing that I do miss when you play against your friend is that we don't talk that week," said Toomey, who has coached Loyola (2-0) since 2007. "We don't talk X's and O's, we don't wish each other luck, we don't do things midweek.

Mount St. Mary's senior Andrew Scalley (Archbishop Spalding) was honored as the Northeast Conference men's lacrosse Player of the Week. Scalley opened the year with a total of five goals and five assists in the first two games of the season. In the Mount's 12-11 win over visiting No. 18 Bucknell on Sunday, he finished with a career-high eight points on three goals and five assists. His goal with 1:35 left in the game tied the score, and he assisted on the winner by Cody Lehrer (Dulaney)

Devin Michael Spence, a teacher at Manchester Valley High School who died Monday, Feb. 11, in a car accident, will be remembered for his big heart and kind soul, according to those who knew him. Spence, 23, was killed after his car crashed into a private school bus and burst into flames Monday morning. The Carroll County Sheriff's Department reported to the scene and believe icy roads played a part in the accident. A math teacher, Spence joined the staff at Manchester Valley High School last August, according to Randy Clark, Manchester Valley's principal.

Navy men's lacrosse coach Rick Sowell is one of six individuals who will be inducted into the Potomac Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Feb. 2. This year's inductees also include Jean Counts, Jon FitzGerald, Laurie Podmilsak, Malcolm Lester and Anna Yates McDermott. College football San Jose St. to play in Military Bowl at RFK San Jose State, fresh off its first 10-win season since 1987, has agreed to play in the Military Bowl on Dec. 27 at RFK Stadium, bowl organizers announced Friday. The Spartans, who received the 26th-most votes in the most recent Associated Press poll, will play a team to be determined after this weekend's games are completed. It will be San Jose State's second trip to the Washington area this season. On Sept. 29, the Spartans defeated Navy, 12-0, in Annapolis.

Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said Friday that he has faith in the direction and leadership of the Terps' football program and that he was encouraged by the team's performance in the final game of a difficult, injury-ravaged 4-8 season. “I feel confident that we're moving this program in the right direction,” Anderson said. Maryland lost its last six games. Anderson, who likes to take the pulse of the team on road trips, traveled to the University of North Carolina for the final game.

The Israel Lacrosse Association has announced that former Johns Hopkins All-American Mark Greenberg will serve as defensive assistant coach of the Israel national team that will compete in the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse Men's World Championship. The championship will be held at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., from July 10-19, 2014. “Adding a second Hall of Fame resume to our coaching staff really strengthens what we're trying to achieve,” said Israel Lacrosse general manager Howard Borkan.
