On the wall of Eddie Gaudet's office is a photo of him as a jockey sitting atop a winner in Florida in the 1950s. Tucked in among dozens of snapshots and 8-by-10s spread over three walls, is another from 1966 showing Gaudet as the winning trainer at Bowie Race Track. "He's the dark-haired one," Linda Gaudet said, pointing to the photos of her husband. "He was the Dean Martin type. " "They used to call me Dean Martin," Gaudet, 81, said, his eyes twinkling from under a baseball cap. The walls are an historic collage that will be adding more photos in the new year as the longtime Maryland horse trainer hands off his business to his wife and 23-year-old daughter Lacey.

THE SHELF life of an actress is usually seven years, by law. That Sharon and myself have survived since Cagney & Lacey is something of a miracle." That's Tyne Daly, who was Mary Beth Lacey to Sharon Gless' Christine Cagney in the classic series about two female detectives, often at odds with each other and with themselves. Tyne, Sharon and Barney Rosenzweig - Sharon's hubby and the producer of Cagney & Lacey - arrive early for breakfast at New York's Regency Hotel. Tyne, who says (jokingly I hope)

CAGNEY & LACEY -- THE TRUE BEGINNING -- MGM / $39.98 Cagney & Lacey was groundbreaking television in the truest sense. Yes, there had been female cops before; Angie Dickinson's Police Woman comes immediately to mind. There had even been teams of female crime-fighters, if you stretch the definition far enough to include Charlie's Angels. But in both of those shows, glamour was just as important as character, maybe even more so. That was the mold that Cagney & Lacey broke. True, Tyne Daly, who played Mary Beth Lacey, and Sharon Gless, who was cast as her partner, Christine Cagney, were attractive, but that wasn't the point.
