After a roller-coaster season that featured a five-game losing streak and after failing to even make the playoffs four straight years, the joy and emotion that poured out of the Bayhawks was to be expected. Rookie attackman Brian Carr oll and second-year midfielder Peet Poillon (UMBC) scored three goals apiece to lead a balanced offense, while second-year defenseman Michael Evans (Johns Hopkins) anchored a suffocating defense as a youthful Chesapeake Bayhawks squad knocked off the veteran Long Island Lizards, 13-9, in the Major League Lacrosse championship game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Goalie Tillman Johnson made the brilliant look routine, midfielder Billy Glading finished a career weekend and the men's lacrosse team from Virginia looked very much like a potential NCAA champion yesterday, as it routed Duke, 12-6, in the final of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. The Cavaliers, co-No. 2 in The Sun/Channel 2 rankings, won their first ACC tournament since 2000. In front of 3,355 at Klockner Stadium, Virginia (9-2) had a decisive five-goal run in the second half.

No. 4 Maryland (5-1) Schedule -- at North Carolina, Saturday, 1 p.m. Skinny -- Defense has carried the Terps through the season's first month, especially junior defenseman Steve Whittenberg and junior goalie Harry Alford. It's time for the offense to start getting into double figures, and it's time for someone other than Xander Ritz and Joe Walters to score. That should happen against another disappointing Tar Heels team, which already is fighting for its playoff life. No. 7 Navy (5-1)

No. 4 Maryland (11-4) vs. No. 9 Princeton (11-4) Time -- Noon Site -- Johnny Unitas Stadium, Towson University Outlook -- For second-seeded Maryland to get past seventh-seeded Princeton and make its third final four in the past four seasons, the Terps will have to beat an opponent they have lost to five straight times in the postseason, since last beating the Tigers in 1977. Princeton, which has won six NCAA titles since 1992 under 19-year coach Bill Tierney and missed the tournament for the first time since 1989 last year, is the last of four Ivy League teams still standing among the original 16-team field.

PHILADELPHIA -- In the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, Virginia's leading scorer, Matt Ward, took a blow to his right hand and suffered a fracture. "I got a broken third metacarpal in my right hand," Ward said yesterday after scoring four goals to lead the Cavaliers into the NCAA Division I championship. "But I wasn't going to let a hand injury keep me out of the NCAAs." He ran into another health problem in the third quarter yesterday against Syracuse - cramps. But that didn't hinder his style, either.
