PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Tonia Kwiatkowski's most distinguished moment is one she would like to forget. It was June 1993, and Kwiatkowski was participating in the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Kwiatkowski was horrible that day, failing to advance and becoming the first American woman to not make it past that round.Kwiatkowski still carries that burden."I've had some really great days, and they have greatly outnumbered the bad ones," she said yesterday. "My worst day, though, just happened to come at the World Championships."

PHILADELPHIA -- She is something of an anomaly in her sport, a world-class skater who spent as much time in the classroom growing up as she did on the rink. Tonia Kwiatkowski is known more for completing her education with a college degree than her career with an Olympic medal.Just as Kwiatkowski would change nothing about the way she has spent the past 18 years of her life, the process of selecting the three female skaters who will represent the United State in Nagano, Japan, next month won't change, either.

When David Kwiatkowski was found slurring his words and smelling of alcohol in a Boston-area hotel room littered with prescription pills late one July night, his life as a traveling medical technician had largely unraveled already. In his early 30s, he was living out of hotels, hopping among hospital jobs - including four in Maryland - and addicted to the powerful narcotic fentanyl, according to court and police documents. Federal investigators, meanwhile, were hot on his trail as they probed an outbreak of hepatitis C at a hospital where he had worked.
