J. George Kropp, an educator whose career at Calvert Hall College High School teaching social studies and history spanned more than 50 years, died Sunday of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. The longtime Loch Raven Village resident was 76. "I call him a legend and an icon. If you knew him, he was always student-centered. He always put the kids first," said Chuck Stembler, principal of Calvert Hall. "He also had a genuine love of his subject and all things history, and he loved the intellectual rigors of history.

Ronald M. Kropp, former director of planning and development for the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services, died of coronary artery disease Oct. 23 at his Otterbein home. He was 56. Mr. Kropp, who was born in Baltimore and raised in Parkville, graduated from Parkville High School in 1964. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Baltimore in 1968. In 1974, he earned a master's degree in comprehensive health system planning from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.

Walter F. Kropp, a second-generation Port of Baltimore worker who hired workers to load and unload ships, and invented a horn to improve longshoremen's safety, died of pneumonia Wednesday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The longtime Baltimore resident was 86. "As a kid I never saw my father because he worked around the clock, especially during the Vietnam War" when he ran the Army's contracts at Dundalk Marine Terminal, said his son, Gary Kropp of Monkton, who followed in his father's footsteps and handles billing for P&O Ports.

Mrs. Michael Kropp, in Joppa, reminds me to "please put in your weather report ... when the [International] Space Station is going to be in the sky so we can see it." It's a kick watching the ISS flyovers but an infrequent one. The station is visible only when it passes over just before dawn or after sunset. Skies must be clear. And I ignore passes too brief, or low to the horizon, to see easily. Otherwise, I try to post 'em all. Next best bet? Before dawn on May 19.

MRS. AMELIA C. NOPPENBERGER, 77 of Mt. Airy, MD., died Friday, May 19, 2006 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Edward D. Noppenberger. Born June 1, 1928 in Baltimore, MD she was the daughter of Michael and Margaret Makoska Kropp. Mrs. Noppenberger was a member of St. Peter's the Apostle Catholic Church in Libertytown, MD. She enjoyed baking, bowling, dancing and traveling. During her working career she was employed at Hasstinger Seafood in Northwood and was a baker at Horn & Horn Cafeteria in Towson, MD. She is survived by her son Howard "Todd" Morley and Tammy of Dundalk, MD and daughter Denise Sturm and husband David of Mt. Airy, MD. Two grandchildren, Alexander and Gregory Sturm.
