For nearly a decade, Kreiner and other veterans have pushed to exempt all military pension earnings from the state income tax - a step that he says would benefit nearly 50,000 Maryland residents.

Rich Kreiner flamed the WeatherBlog yesterday after I said our pre-Christmas rain "wasn't all bad," since December rainfall had been scant. "What is wrong with some people!!??" he ranted. "Some months are average, some below, some above ... Those of us that have to drive ... in this slop would probably take exception to your comments." Sure, rain is annoying, until our crops wilt, grocery prices rise, wells and reservoirs drain. Winter rains recharge the soil and watertables. Get wet. Be thankful.

A tax-break bill for military veterans - legislation sponsored by Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. that sputtered in the General Assembly for years - now seems made of momentum. At a rally yesterday outside the State House, the governor and Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele were joined by the General Assembly's Democratic leadership - everyone enthusiastically endorsing a bill that would allow 20-year veterans to skip the state income tax on their military pensions. "You were told it would be done last year, but it was not done for the worst of reasons," Ehrlich said.
