Rather than endure a thin roster for an extended period or risk worsening an injury, the Orioles placed third baseman Melvin Mora on the disabled list yesterday and recalled outfielder Jon Knott from Triple-A Norfolk. Mora was diagnosed with a Grade 1 sprain in his left foot Friday after undergoing a magnetic resonance imaging and CT scan. He originally suffered the injury July 1 while sliding into Los Angeles Angels catcher Mike Napoli on a play at home plate and aggravated it during the first inning of Thursday night's game, when he left after one inning.

Looking to provide depth at shortstop and second base, the Orioles recalled infielder Brandon Fahey from Triple-A Norfolk yesterday and optioned outfielder-first baseman Jon Knott to the Tides. Fahey was hitting .227 with seven doubles, six triples, two homers and 24 RBIs in 76 games. He had a .296 on-base percentage and a .315 slugging percentage. Over his past 10 games, however, Fahey hit .359 with three doubles and two triples. Knott struck out twice and walked Sunday in his only start since rejoining the Orioles.
