Syracuse defenseman Brandon Mullins will miss the rest of the season because of a right knee injury that will require surgery, the team announced Thursday. Mullins went down in the fourth quarter of Friday night's 9-8 overtime victory against Virginia, clutching his knee when he hit the Carrier Dome turf. He labored off the field but did not return. Mullins was enjoying a strong start to his sophomore campaign, contributing significant minutes in Syracuse's first three games, including starting two. He garnered attention for his ability to cover skilled offensive players and make plays in the middle of the field.

Right-hander Jason Hammel made his first appearance of the exhibition season in Friday's win over the Pirates , and he did nothing to diminish his confidence in his surgically repaired right knee. He was all smiles after throwing 39 pitches - 27 of them for strikes - and hitting 93 mph on the Ed Smith Stadium radar gun during a two-inning performance in which he allowed no runs and just one hit. “Nice to be out there with two good knees," Hammel said. “Very, very happy that the results were good.

Johns Hopkins is two days away from its season and home opener against Siena, and one of the few questions facing the Blue Jays is the status of senior midfielder John Greeley, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in an 8-2 loss to Navy on April 21. Greeley, who underwent surgery on the knee in May, has been cleared to practice and is participating fully, but coach Dave Pietramala said he hasn't made any determination on whether...

Digital Harbor's A'Lexus Harrison breathed a sigh of relief Saturday afternoon when doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital told her that she had only slightly sprained her right knee during a game at the 17th annual Basketball Academy. Harrison, a 6-foot All-Metro forward-guard who has signed with Maryland, said Saturday night that nothing was broken and no ligaments were torn when she got tangled up with an opposing player while battling for a rebound. With her knee bent in an awkward position, Harrison had feared she might join a growing list of elite Baltimore-area girls basketball players sidelined this winter with knee injuries.

Orioles right-hander Jason Hammel, shelved twice in the second half of last season because of injuries to his right knee, said he has no restrictions on the joint after having a check-up with team doctors Friday. Hammel missed nearly eight weeks after arthroscopic surgery on his knee in mid-July, only to re-injure the joint in his second start since coming off the disabled list Sept. 11. The 30-year-old was able to return to start Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Yankees, but said then that rest would be the only way his knee would get healthy.

Bernard Pierce returned to practice for the first time this week and after Thursday's session, the rookie running back declared himself and his injured right knee ready for the Ravens' road game against the Denver Broncos in Saturday's AFC Divisional playoff round. “I'm good,” he said. “I'm ready to go. I'm ready to go to war with my guys.” Pierce's availability could be significant for the Ravens. He has led the team in rushing in each of the last three contests, culminating with a 13-carry, 103-yard performance in last Sunday's 24-9 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Wildcard round.

Glenelg guard Emily Russo scored her 1,000th career point earlier this month, and that will stand as the highlight of her basketball season because the 2011-12 All-Metro first-team selection suffered a season-ending knee injury - a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a torn meniscus - in a game against Mount Hebron on Dec. 17. She has scheduled surgery for Friday and will miss lacrosse season, too. A three-sport standout, Russo was also an All-Metro...

ACC/Big Ten Challenge No. 11 Maryland @No.21 Nebraska Wednesday, 8p.m. The instant Brene Moseley planted her left leg and heard the familiar pop, she had no doubt. Maryland's promising sophomore point guard was out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Adding to the exasperation were the setting and circumstances: an intrasquad scrimmage at Comcast Center on Oct. 21 during which Moseley absorbed no contact when her knee buckled. Teammates did all they could to console Moseley, suggesting she try to walk.

Inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and tight end Ed Dickson were knocked out of Sunday's game with injuries, but Harbaugh said tests confirmed that neither injury was serious. He expects both to be “very limited” in practice throughout the week. “We'll just have to see how it goes,” he said. “We'll try to get them to the game on Sunday.” Dickson sprained his knee and Ellerbe injured his right foot or ankle, according to Harbaugh. In other injury news, Harbaugh said he is hopeful that defensive end Pernell McPhee, who has missed four straight games with injuries to his right knee and right thigh, can play this weekend.
