Philip T. Klima Sr., a retired Baltimore police officer who was on duty when an assassin tried to kill Mayor William Donald Schaefer during a 1976 shooting rampage, died Tuesday of a heart attack at his Locust Point home. He was 78. Mr. Klima, the son of a city police officer and a homemaker, was born in Baltimore and raised on East Monument Street. He was a 1949 graduate of Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School and played the bass drum in the Kenwood Drum & Bugle Corps.

Edward J. Klima, who as an Anne Arundel County commissioner supported charter government for the county in the 1960s, died Monday of cancer at his home in Ocean City, where he had lived since 1985. He was 68.Mr. Klima retired in 1993 after 15 years as an administrative law judge for the state Motor Vehicle Administration.In 1978, he retired as a partner in the law firm of Klima, May & Harris, which he founded in 1966."He was the kind of lawyer who had a heart of gold," said a son, Craig J. Klima of Severna Park.

State Del. Martha S. Klima, R-Baltimore County, a two-term delegate from Towson, yesterday announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md.Mrs. Klima said Ms. Mikulski is out of step with the average voter, who feels that taxes are too high, that state and federal spending is excessive and that elected officials are not doing enough to turn around the nation's ailing economy."We're at a point where we can't continue on with business as usual," she said.

The Maryland League of Conservation Voters endorsed Maryland Senate candidate Jim Brochin in the 42nd District yesterday, praising his views on preserving open space and protecting the Chesapeake and deriding his opponent, Del. Martha S. Klima, as having one of the worst environmental records of any state legislator. Susan Brown, executive director of the Maryland League of Conservation Voters, said she believes Brochin, a Democrat who has never held elective office, would be an effective advocate for environmental issues.

Glen Burnie's Kristy Klima added to what has already been a sensational sophomore season as she claimed top individual XTC honors at yesterday's Class 4A East regional titles at Baybrook Park.Klima, the Anne Arundel County champion and winner of four major invitationals this year, led a field of 75 runners for 3.1 muddy miles before winning in a time of 19 minutes, 4 seconds."This kid is making me famous," said Klima's coach, Tony Benicewicz. "They say that everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame.

At 5 foot 2 and 92 pounds, Glen Burnie sophomore Kristy Klima wasn't the most imposing figure among the 111 runners who made it to the starting line for the girls race at yesterday's sixth annual Knights Invite at Baybrook Park.But Klima proved that you don't have to be big to succeed in cross country as she won in 19 minutes and 16 seconds.Cory Smith of Calvert Hall knocked 30 seconds off the course record set by Smith and teammates Jonathan Dietrich and Doug Stewart last season when they crossed the finish line simultaneously.
