Citing the "bravery of two" but noting the "valor of all" their colleagues, the state's governor and city's mayor lauded Thursday the workers who helped save an infant being stabbed at a social services office in East Baltimore. William Purnell Short III hit the suspect with a chair, forcing her to drop the infant, and Dana Hayes screamed for help, prompting a flurry of 911 calls that got police and paramedics quickly to the social services complex on Biddle Street on April 24. Short held the suspect — who police said bit him on the hands — until police arrived.

"I hope my baby is dead. " These are the chilling words from a mother who is now charged with repeatedly stabbing her 8-month-old child during a supervised visit with a social service's worker. The account comes from police charging documents filed in court that detail the horrific incident. Social workers rushed to help the child, and one threw a chair at her, forcing her to drop the baby, the knife still in her neck. One worker told police she confronted the suspect as she held her daughter on a table with one hand and the knife in the other.

Hearing his co-worker scream Tuesday morning, "She's stabbing the baby, help!" William Purnell Short III ran into Room 117 at Baltimore's social services office on East Biddle Street. Police said the 8-month-old girl had already been stabbed five times in the head, neck and chest. Short told detectives he saw a woman using her left hand to hold the baby on a table and her right hand to press a silver-bladed kitchen knife to the infant's throat. "I'm going to kill her," police quoted her as saying.
