It's one of those things you have to see to believe -- a building constructed from the ground up in three days.That's how the Jehovah's Witnesses build their Kingdom Halls. Admittedly, all the preliminary foundation and site work is done beforehand over a period of months, but the actual construction of the building takes place in a single long weekend.Last week's new Kingdom Hall in Berrett for the Eldersburg congregation was the second such building project by Jehovah's Witnesses in Carroll County.

Samuel J. "Jimmy" White, a retired CSX supervisor and avid Orioles fan, died Tuesday of lung cancer at his Glen Burnie home. He was 80. The son of a South Baltimore tavern owner and a homemaker, Samuel James White was born and raised in a Race Street rowhouse. He was a 1951 graduate of Southern High School and was a catcher and pitcher for a South Baltimore baseball team, where he played against future Hall of Famer Al Kaline, said his son, James Timothy White of Linthicum. Mr. White began his railroad career in 1950, cleaning cabooses for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.

A 16-year-old boy was shot in the face and hip in Baltimore's Rosemont neighborhood Sunday afternoon, police said. The boy was in critical but stable condition at a hospital after the shooting, which happened about 3:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of N. Ellamont St., police said. Police were working to determine a suspect and a motive. Near the scene of the shooting, which witnesses said happened on the street outside the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses building, young children played outside and neighbors returned home with groceries.
