Provident, with $5.3 billion in assets and 98 branches, spent $1.5 million on media advertising last year. By 11 p.m., when she went to bed, Qianzhen Nelson was too excited to sleep. Still wide-awake two hours later, she spent the rest of that January night sitting in her car outside a real estate sales trailer, determined to get the new home she and her husband Bob want -- in one of Columbia's oldest areas. The Nelsons and dozens of other families are quietly challenging the perception that Columbia's older villages may be losing their allure -- and Columbia's supporters are loving it. Despite occasional news articles about crime, worries about schools and upscale families fleeing to wealthier, more rural areas of Columbia and Howard County, the first 20 Ryland Home lots at Ecker's Hollow, between Oakland Mills and Long Reach, were sold in a few hours last month.

The Washington College women's lacrosse team has posted its best record of the 1990s and stands on the brink of finishing with the most wins in school history.Tuesday's 17-5 win over Bryn Mawr raised the Shorewomen's record to 11-5. With a victory in their season finale at Gettysburg tomorrow, they would surpass the record for wins set in 1989.Not bad for a team that finished 4-13 last year and had not enjoyed a winning season since 1991."We knew this was the last chance in the 1990s to put a winning spin on our program's history," said coach Eleanor Shriver.
