UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The difference in Penn State quarterback Kevin Thompson can't be seen, at least not yet. Joe Paterno has been closing practices here for most, if not all, of his 33 seasons as coach and now coaching legend. Those outside the program won't get their first sustained look of the more experienced, more confident Thompson until tomorrow's season-opening Pigskin Classic between the third-ranked Nittany Lions and fourth-ranked Arizona Wildcats at Beaver Stadium. For now, there are only snippets from the spring game and sound bites at 6 and 11."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -Morgan State wasn't allowing a trying loss to Oklahoma - and the ejection of one of its players - to diminish a memorable season in which the Bears advanced to the Division I NCAA tournament for the first time. "These guys have made history," Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman said after his team was routed, 82-54, on Thursday night by Oklahoma, the South Regional's No. 2 seed. "No one can take it away from them. No one will do it ever again in terms of being the first program or team to go to NCAA tournament [from]

In three brief but uplifting seasons, Todd Bozeman has not only changed the culture of basketball at Morgan State, but he has also altered the itineraries of numerous Baltimore players. Not long ago, there was an exodus of Baltimore's best high school talent, NCAA qualifiers and nonqualifiers both, for junior colleges, mid-majors and Division I programs across the country. Even those who went to junior college rarely returned to play here. That's all changing. Even before Morgan won two straight regular-season titles in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the flow of outbound talent had abated.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -When Morgan State rebuffed one last, desperate rush from Tywain McKee and Coppin State last night, the Bears were finally able to let go of their 2008 nightmare. McKee's torrid 30-point performance almost brought Coppin back from an 18-point deficit in the second half, but Morgan escaped Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum with a 75-67 victory that was as much backyard brawl as it was tournament basketball. The win sent the No. 1-seeded Bears (22-11) into tonight's 7 o'clock Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference final in search of their first NCAA Division I tournament berth.

After watching his team struggle throughout the first half against lightly regarded Howard yesterday, Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman delivered a halftime speech that players said held back little. "I can't really tell you [what I said], but I wasn't happy," Bozeman said. Once play resumed, his outlook quickly changed. Paced by the long-range shooting of guard Reggie Holmes (St. Frances) - whose 22 points led five players in double figures - Morgan scored 16 straight points early in the half to take command, easily putting away the short-handed and overmatched Bison, 78-56, at Hill Field House.

Broadneck's shocking 22-21 upset of No. 5-ranked Annapolis on Friday night continued the Panthers' frustration of not finishing the regular season unbeaten, and it also halted the Panthers' bid to become the county's first team to average 40 points a game. For the second time in three years, coach Roy Brown's Panthers went into their final regular-season game at 9-0 and came up short. The Panthers, who tied North County's 1992 record for most points scored in 10 games (393), clinched a 3A playoff berth last week.
