Mount Hebron High School's girls lacrosse team spent most of the spring mastering its opponents.Hebron's speed, stickwork and nearly unstoppable ball-control attack overmatched teams in a way that surprised even the Vikings, a young team that reclaimed the county championship easily and began its quest for an elusive state title with a 30-10 quarterfinal playoff rout of Overlea. But Tuesday in the Class 1A/2A state semifinals against defendingstate champion Loch Raven (Baltimore County), the Vikings once againfound themselves in a familiar postseason role -- that of the pupil futilely chasing the master.

How can Mount Hebron be No. 2 to anybody? That was the burning question last night as the second-ranked ** Vikings defeated 12th-ranked South Carroll, 16-10, in a girls lacrosse game that was basically over at halftime.Mount Hebron flashed all the skills any girls lacrosse team could want in the first half, rolling to a 16-2 lead that enabled Vikings coach P. J. Kesmodel to go the entire second half with mostly reserves. With the likes of Mount Hebron attackers Dani Vissers and Cathy Nelson and starting goalkeeper Jen Brooks on the bench in the second half, South Carroll was able to rally to make the final score more respectable for the home team.

Mount Hebron's girls lacrosse team fulfilled the inevitable Friday, as the unbeaten Vikings clinched their fourth county title in five years with a 19-6 blowout of visiting Atholton.Hebron, which has crushed each of its six county opponents with an offense that coach P.J. Kesmodel calls his best ever, stayed true to form by delivering an early knockout to the Raiders. The Vikings (6-0 county, 13-0 overall) scored at will throughout the first half and took a 12-1 halftime lead. Hebron outshot Atholton in the first half, 26-4.

As a freshman at City College, Erika Brown wanted to play lacrosse. She just didn't want to practice. "My famous excuse was, `I can't come to practice because I have to go home and cut the grass,' " said Brown, now a senior. "Every other day, the grass had to be cut. I wouldn't come to practice." Now, there are no excuses. Brown shows up every day for practice with the two-time defending Baltimore City champion Knights. She also puts in extra time honing her stick skills. Each year, Brown's commitment to the game has become stronger.

It doesn't seem to matter what class Mount Hebron plays at -- the Vikings are as good as gold. The Howard County team (16-1) ran its string of successive state championships to four last night, the first two in Class 1A-2A, the last two in 3A-4A.C.M. Wright (11-5) from Harford County, became the latest victim, as it was simply overwhelmed, 20-7, at Catonsville Community College.Wright was within a goal midway through the first half, but Mount Hebron scored four more before halftime. The leaders then came out and scored three in less than a minute, effectively taking Wright out of the game.

Mount Hebron may be ranked No. 1, but coach P. J. Kesmodel and the Vikings often feel like the Rodney Dangerfield of local girls lacrosse. So Kesmodel took his team to play No. 2 Roland Park, and the Vikings proved they should own the No. 1 spot. With an 11-6 victory, the Vikings ended the Reds' 25-game winning streak in the championship of the Roland Park North-South Invitational Tournament yesterday in northern Baltimore City."We never get any respect," said Kesmodel, whose Vikings won the Class 2A/1A state title last spring.
