Julie Kershaw refused to label her 6-year-old daughter "black" or "white" when she registered the girl at McCormick Elementary School in eastern Baltimore County last week. So, in what some say has become an uncomfortable rite for multiracial families nationwide, officials chose for her -- labeling Sa'sha Rogers-Kershaw as "white," to the displeasure of her parents."She knows she's black and white. She's proud of who she is," Kershaw, who is white, said of her daughter. "Her father and I are not together but he agrees with me. Neither one of us wants to drop part of her ethnicity."

In Susan Kershaw's eyes, a dried coneflower on a slender stalk is not a prickly brown husk, but texture to be added to a winter floral arrangement. An empty room is not simply a space to be filled with furniture, but an opportunity to create an environment. An old glass vase is not junk, but a unique vessel for flower art.Kershaw, a creator of floral arrangements and interior designs, has fashioned environments for families and for films and television shows, for real life and for pretend.

Mike Muldoon always wanted to play quarterback, but until this season, the Salisbury State junior receiver never had gotten the opportunity -- anywhere. That changed on Oct. 5, when starter Kris Kershaw and backup Jeff Dolch both went down with injuries at Catholic. Muldoon, who had taken some snaps in practice, played the closing minutes, and he's been more involved since then, appearing in Salisbury's last two games and going a combined 9-for-22 for 99 yards. In the Sea Gulls' most recent game, Nov. 2 against Bethany, he was called upon in the first quarter after Kershaw injured his shoulder.

Still digging out from the rubble of the previous regime, the Ottawa Rough Riders began looking down the road last week. They introduced their 1995 season-ticket plan with special discounts for fans who pay in full by Nov. 5.Such is the state of a Canadian Football League franchise that hasn't had a winning season since 1979, and barely lasted through the Bernie Glieberman era, which stretched from 1991 until this year. The Rough Riders, who face the Baltimore CFLs in Ottawa today, have already cut ticket prices three times this season, and they've seen one potential investor pull out. Now, they're borrowing on next year's ticket revenues.
