The 20-year-old man accused of shooting a Baltimore police officer with a rifle this week had long wanted to shoot someone and remarked that he felt nothing after wounding the officer, charging documents allege. Police arrested and charged Chey Jordan with attempted murder in the Tuesday night shooting. In interviews with detectives, Jordan showed a strong disdain for police and had "no love lost" for the Baltimore department, but Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III said a motive for the attack was unclear.

Last year, as Father's Day approached, I asked readers to answer the question, "What did you learn from your father?" The response was impressive. Men and women from all over, most of them baby boomers, took the opportunity to write loving tributes to their dads and to enumerate life lessons they'd passed along. Reading them made me happy, and envious. Many of the responses were posted on my blog, Random Rodricks. This year, we asked the same question and didn't get much of a response.

At a time when City Hall is girding for another round of budget battles, spending on lawsuits filed against the Police Department is coming under increased scrutiny. The city's budget office revealed at an investigative hearing Tuesday that it has spent $10.4 million over the past three years — an average of about $3.5 million annually — defending the Baltimore Police Department against lawsuits. Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke called for the hearing over what she called an "especially troubling" trend of the Police Department paying out millions over brutality claims while other parts of the budget, such as recreation centers, suffer cuts.

One by one, citizens of Baltimore who had failed to show up for jury duty stood before the judge. Some pleaded they were sick or busy, and showed letters from doctors. Most simply agreed to pick a date and sign a summons, and the judge kindly dismissed charges that could have sent some to jail for a year. Eric King brought a lawyer and requested a hearing. In the courtroom Wednesday, Robert L. Pierson of Pierson & Pierson of Towson turned to his client and asked: "Did anything happen on February 8 that caused you not to appear?"

How much more can the Cardinals take? Matt Holliday's appendectomy followed an 11-inning Opening Day loss in which the losing pitcher, Bryan Augenstein, probably wouldn't have been used if Adam Wainwright's season-ending injury had not made a starter of Kyle McClellan. … Some people think Jered Weaver ends the year with the Yankees. The guess here is that he and the Angels' other top starters, Ervin Santana and Dan Haren , are good enough to keep Mike Scioscia's team in the running all season.

The songs coming out of that box are a sight better at telling the truth about money than any number of economists.(George Bernard Shaw was dead right when he noted that ''if all economists were laid end to end they would not reach a conclusion.
