Losing can come over a good team like a change in the weather. The Portland Trail Blazers had played .728 basketball over three seasons and desperately wanted a championship to show for it. They built a huge lead over Chicago in the sixth game of last year's NBA Finals, 17 points up in the third quarter, and were going to tie the series and extend the season one more game: 48 minutes for the title. But with Michael Jordan, Horace Grant, John Paxson and Bill Cartwright on the bench, Scottie Pippen and four reserves made a 14-2 run as the Commentarystorm clouds gathered.

The hot, dry weather during August took a toll on Maryland's soybean harvest, according to a government survey. In its crop production report released this past week, the government reduced its estimated yield for soybeans to 33 bushels per acre, down nearly 20 percent from its prediction of 41 bushels per acre the previous month. The survey was based on field conditions as of Sept. 1 and included information from several hundred farms across the state, said Jeanne McCarthy-Kersey, deputy director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's statistics service for Maryland.

He has flourished since the Spurs went to the pick-and-roll earlier in the season, and is capable of beating a defender off the dribble. Ward is a starter in name only -- the bulk of the important minutes will go to Chris Childs, a solid defender who also hit several big three-pointers in the Indiana series.Edge: SpursShooting guardMario Elie vs. Allan Houston: Elie provides a toughness that the Spurs had lacked in the past.
