Keri Sirbaugh's father shakes in his seat, struggling to talk without crying. Twisting his beefy hands into a knot, he shrinks down in his wicker patio chair. Tears leak from beneath his dark sunglasses. The big man is crumbling again."Please," he gasps. "Tell people, the least little thing -- anything at all -- if you know, please call the police. Please."It has been three weeks since Bill Sirbaugh drove in a panic to his daughter's apartment at the end of a dead-end street in Northeast Baltimore and found her body dumped in a gloomy gulch of woods 40 footsteps from her door.

Novel 72 Hour Hold By Bebe Moore Campbell. Knopf. 336 pages. Tom Cruise has been railing against psychiatry recently, attacking fellow actor Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressants during a bout of post-partum depression so severe she contemplated killing both herself and her baby daughter. Psychiatry is a hoax, Cruise asserts, and all anyone needs to cure depression are diet, exercise and vitamins. Keri Whitmore, narrator of Bebe Moore Campbell's explosive new novel, would likely be less restrained than Shields was in her recent op-ed piece in The New York Times.

The title character of Adrienne Shelly's modest, wonderful Waitress is the unhappily married Jenna (Keri Russell), a working woman with a baby on the way and a genius for making pies. The movie is an inspired comedy-drama about artistic temperament. We usually reserve that phrase for writers, painters or visionary thinkers. But Jenna sees the structure of her baked goods whole, the way Einstein would envision his theories or Picasso his paintings. And Shelly sees Jenna as a small-town Southern gal who uses her sensibility to transcend her circumstances.

HOLLYWOOD -- Keri Russell knows from typecasting. She's played a pregnant character in her last four films, including the romantic comedy Waitress, which opens this month. "I don't know what about me screams young pregnant mother," said Russell, 31, with amusement. Whatever it is, life has followed suit. The actress -- almost as famous for cutting her hair as for winning a Golden Globe for her breakthrough role on TV's Felicity -- is about to have her first child with husband Shane Deary, a carpenter she married three months ago. "I always knew I would have kids," said Russell from her apartment in New York.
