About 650 people competed last Sunday in the annual 4.4-mile Great Chesapeake Bay Swim. The competitors started Sandy Point State Park and swam through open water, near the Bay Bridge, to Kent Island.

KENT ISLAND -- A windsurfer whose sail collapsed in mid-Chesapeake Bay during yesterday's brisk, frigid winds was able to paddle several miles across the bay to safety, Natural Resources Police said.Natural Resources Police spokesman John Verrico identified the windsurfer as Michael Giblin, 26, of Arnold.Mr. Giblin, who Mr. Verrico said was wearing a waterproof suit during his venture, paddled more than three miles to Kent Island on the Eastern Shore when the sail on his board failed.The windsurfer was noticed to be missing about 4 p.m. by park rangers at Sandy Point State Park, east of Annapolis.

Mandarin Construction Co., a leading builder in Anne Arundel County,is now engaged in its first-ever Eastern Shore project, a private residential community on Kent Island.Dubbed "Crosswinds," the community is located at the southern tip of the island, and includes 76 acres set aside as a wildlife sanctuary.

Marian Price Steuart, a retired state worker and founder of th Kent Island Heritage Society, died Thursday at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a long illness. She was 87.Services for Mrs. Steuart were being held today at Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville.Born on Kent Island, Mrs. Steuart graduated from Stevensville High School in 1920.She lived on the Eastern Shore her entire life, working as a store clerk at Frampton's IGA and Blum's Variety Store in Stevensville. Later, she owned a restaurant and served as a justice of the peace on Kent Island.

BART LEE SHEFFEY (56) of Stevensville, MD on Friday, July 23, 2004 peacefully at his home after a lengthy illness. In addition to his beloved wife Elizabeth, he is survived by his devoted son, Kevin Wayne Sheffey and three loving brothers, Lawrence W. Sheffey, William Preston Sheffey and David Martin Sheffey. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 27, 2004 at 11 AM at the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, MD. ISSUE: Proponents of a high-speed, passengers-only ferry service linking Annapolis, Kent Island and Baltimore held a sea trial last week, with a 22-minute voyage the group hopes will show the feasibility of the idea. Several backers of the idea rode a 38-foot powerboat between City Dock and Matapeake State Park on Kent Island, the latest effort by a committee of city officials, ferry fans and urban planners. Their draft proposal calls for two-vessel service from the harbor in Baltimore to Kent Island and then to City Dock.
