It was the only commencement address he ever gave.Standing on the manicured lawns of Washington College on May 24, John F. Kennedy Jr. echoed his father and told graduates they had an obligation to serve their communities. His visit entranced Chestertown, sending residents clamoring for tickets to the graduation.Kennedy flew to the commencement appearance, traveling in his plane from New Jersey to New Castle, Del., with his flight instructor, Washington College President John S. Toll said yesterday.

Horizon Organic Holding Corp., the company that opened a dairy on Maryland's Eastern Shore last year and is eyeing the recently closed Naval Academy Dairy Farm for expansion, reported a sharp turnaround yesterday in fourth-quarter and year-end operations.Net income for the Boulder, Colo., company for the three months that ended Dec. 31 was $586,000, or 6 cents a common share. In the final quarter of 1997, the company posted a loss of $281,000, equal to 6 cents a share.Sales rose 62.6 percent to $14.7 million, from $9 million.

Etta M. VogtsTaught blind childrenEtta M. Vogts, a former teacher at the Maryland School for the Blind, died Jan. 22 of respiratory failure at the Carol Woods Retirement Center in Durham, N.C., where she had lived since 1979. The former Rosemont Avenue resident was 95.She retired from the school for the blind in 1970 after a 17-year career as a music teacher in the lower school. The former Etta Miles also taught there from 1920 to 1922, before marrying Elmer A. Vogts, a piano and violin teacher at the school.

OCEAN CITY -- Before his talk on business issues now pending before the U.S. Congress, Representative Tom McMillen wanted to get his bearings."I believe I'm in the 1st District," Mr. McMillen said. "Is that correct?"The three-term Democratic congressman from Anne Arundel County knew as well as anyone that this seaside resort lies smack in the middle of the 1st Congressional District.But possibly, he was suggesting, the boundaries had been changed yet again.Mr. McMillen addressed his playful question to Representative Wayne T. Gilchrest, the 1st District's incumbent.

Republican Ellen R. Sauerbrey has topped the $3 million mark in fund raising for her gubernatorial campaign with a steady flow of small and large donations, according to a report to be filed with the state election board today.Sauerbrey and running mate Richard D. Bennett collected $259,823 -- or more than $13,000 a day -- during the 19-day period covered by the report. About 20 percent came from out-of-state contributors, more than double the percentage from earlier in the campaign.Setting a record for a Republican candidate for governor in Maryland with every dollar it collects, the Sauerbrey team has raised $3.2 million and has $1.4 million on hand.

Seventy of the 86 suspected illegal immigrants arrested Tuesday in a raid on a Kent County nursery will be voluntarily deported today, according to the Baltimore director of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, who yesterday defended the conduct of his agents during the operation.The 70 Mexican citizens will be flown on a government charter, due to leave Baltimore-Washington International Airport about 1 p.m., to Harlingen, Texas, where they will board a bus and be transported across the border, said Benedict J. Ferro, head of the INS office in Baltimore.

Three workers at a Kent County nursery were injured yesterday after lightning struck near them as they sought shelter from a storm, a farm supervisor said. The day before, an Oxon Hill teenager was struck and killed by lightning while waiting at a bus stop. The 2,000-acre Angelica Nurseries Inc., in rural Kennedyville, employs about 200 Hispanic migrant workers, said supervisor Chris Atkinson. He was called to the scene because he is trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Atkinson said the employees were following procedures by trying to get to a Ford Econoline van because of reports of violent storms in the area.

Slammer bluefish are making their best run in several years, and although the 12- to 18-pound fish have not schooled up, they are making for great sport from the Middle Grounds off Point Lookout up to the Bay Bridge area.What that means for avid bluefish anglers is a chance to win money or prizes in the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen's eighth annual Big Money Bluefish Tournament Saturday and next Sunday.The tournament is open to boats whose captains are members '' of the MSSA by the last skippers meeting Thursday.

Frederick Co. woman killed in head-on crash 1 A 51-year-old Frederick County woman was killed in a head-on collision Saturday afternoon on Route 26 at Old Liberty Road, state police said. Police said Patricia Marie Ryan was killed when the car she was driving east on Route 26 crossed the center line and collided with a pickup truck, causing the truck to overturn. Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, Alfonso Contreras Balderas, 32, of Frederick County and two passengers were taken to Washington County Hospital, where they were treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
